go to a GP first.

that what i thought too, but will GP able to recomand the right type of doctors? i thought there are 2 types of specialist for this type of treatment.

Major depression is manifested by a combination of symptoms (see symptom list) that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy once pleasurable activities. Such a disabling episode of depression may occur only once but more commonly occurs several times in a lifetime.

A less severe type of depression, dysthymia, involves long-term, chronic symptoms that do not disable, but keep one from functioning well or from feeling good. Many people with dysthymia also experience major depressive episodes at some time in their lives.

Symptoms
* Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood
* Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
* Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
* Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
* Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"
* Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
* Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
* Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain
* Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
* Restlessness, irritability
* Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain

lifted from here. but as wat reachme2003 said, it'd be better if your friend went to see a GP first and if needed, the GP will refer your friend to a psychiatrist/psychologist. but my lecturers specialise in child psychology else i'd have given you their contact.

hope your friend gets better!

well, i am no doctor.

hahaha..
well for it to be classified as "proper" depression, the symptoms will have to be there for at least 3months or more.

thks, my friend has problems since young but manage to hide well, thanks for the contacts man, i bring my friend to the GP tomorrow and hope they refer him to a specialist.

another option is to go to Mount Eliz hosp website. they have free consultation with a counsellor to determine the best route of action (see specialist or not). I hope your friend gets well soon...

try this http://www.depnet.com.sg/

Personally i think seeing one from SGH would be a good idea.
Go to the poly clinic and ask for referral. :)

I know someone who is very good in this field .... a bit pricey, but if yr friend can afford i think it is well-worth to see him.... pm me if you need his contact.

Since the others have offered lists and references, I'll mention what no one did:

1) Is your friend LOOKING for, or is RECEPTIVE to the idea of help?

If not, you have an uphill battle.

Secondly, do you think your friend needs comfort and counselling more, or is his depression on the edge of pushing him over, and where clinical assistance, including medication is needed more urgently?

The reason why i ask is because clinical or chronic long-term depression is normally best treated by a 2-prong approach:

1) Medical - with medication - this is where psychiatrists are most useful.

2) Emotional / Social - this is where psychologists, counsellors and family/friends are needed.

I would suggest a medical check-up first at IMH. It's discreet, P&C and does not require any referal. Just call up and make an appointment. It is also the most affordable option.

I would then suggest finding a professional counsellor. My recommendation is the Care & Counselling Centre (Dir Anthony Yeo) - 6536 6366. Yes, there are many other counsellors, but given the experience as well as backgrouns of the C&C, I'll stick to that recommendation. You can do a search for more info. The C&C is also a very affordable option as opposed to psychologists or private practises.

Only god can help. Try my church...New Creation Church @ suntec city.

i suggest seeing a social worker to get some counselling 1st.

One of the last things I'd recommend is to go to the polyclinic GP and get a referral. My experience with a tactless GP has left an everlasting bitter taste.

Recognising the problem is the first step to fixing a depression. Personally, the only way I could fix the problem was to see my medical bill at the end of each session. That was a real wakeup call for me that I didn't need it....

Just my personal thoughts and experience.
