The White-whiskered Laughingthrush (Garrulax morrisonianus) is a species of bird in the family Leiothrichidae, the laughingthrushes. It is endemic to the island of Taiwan. It is somewhat common, and though its population is decreasing, it is not considered a vulnerable species. It is quite a large bird with average weight of 73.1g, thus it hops around and usually glide for short distances with its wings. Its habitat is usually subtropical or tropical moist montane forests (2500 to 3500m above sea level).

Like other flowerpeckers, this tiny bird feeds on fruits and plays an important role in the dispersal of fruiting plants. Unlike many other species in the genus, this species has marked sexual dimorphism with the male having contrasting upper and lower parts with a distinctive bright orange breast patch.

30. Some folks wait days in vain just to see this bird. I was able to spot the male and female moving in and out of our sight for short periods.
Near the end of the day at sunset, both suddenly appeared together, and give us a family portrait! What sheer luck! Making our 5 hour wait all worth it!

Verditer Flycatcher 銅藍鶲
台湾花莲太鲁阁拍摄

The Verditer Flycatcher (Eumyias thalassinus) is an Old World flycatcher found in the Indian subcontinent, especially in the Lower Himalaya. Although I have personally seen and photographed this species several times in Vietnam and South East Asia, this species is not known to be found in Taiwan. This particular bird is the only known bird of this species in the entire Taiwan Island. Experts I have talked to thinks that it is a lost bird, probably got lost during its migration and ended up in Hualian Taiwan. It is also thanks to this one bird, that hordes of serious birders all over Taiwan came to Hualian to photograph it, causing a mad rush. This bird also attracted many senior folks of conservation and nature research organizations to the same location. I had the pleasure of being introduced to them by my local Taiwanese friends. Pretty soon news spread among the local birding community that a Singaporean with a fake Taiwanese accent is among them birding in Central and East Taiwan. LOL.

Thanks bro.. still got more coming... cannot post too much at one time... I pretty much photographed every bird I set out to shoot. And also photographed every species I spotted except for one I missed... saw but did not manage to photograph the White-bellied Erpornis... such a beautiful bird... Almost wanted to extend 1 more day just to capture it... But have to leave some target for a next trip I guess. And luckily, I brought enough memory cards...

All the long car rides, car sickness, eating rice balls meals in the forests, waiting for hours and hours... all worth it! Experienced weathers from blue skies to rain to snow to iced up roads. A very successful trip indeed, thanks to my Taiwanese birding friends who brought me around, showed me where the birds frequent and explained the birds' routines and behavior so I can capture them better. Very encouraged by the friendliness of the Taiwanese birding community, and experienced their hospitality to the max!
