remove the card. Use recovery software. I am using R-studio. Can recover some data even after format. But cannot send you the software, because that will be called piracy.

But you can try this:

Thanks for responding but R-Studio doesn't work as D90 is not recognized as a mass storage device.

Anyone else has a clue on how to unformat the SD card?

Use a card reader instead of connecting your camera to the computer. Your computer should recognise it as a mass storage device

Use a card ready dude.... never do it over your D90.
