Hey guys...
Does your D90's AF assist illuminator emits bright white light instead of red light to the subject which is dim in light?
I've used D300s before and the illuminator emits a red light which is soft to the human eyes but when i tried to focus my model's eyes using my D90 with the illuminator assist, the light was so strong that my model started seeing shadows in her eyes after a few shots...

is that normal?

D300s illuminator is also the same bright light wat...
Unless you mount a Nikon Speedlight, then the AF assist lamp will be the red LEDs from the speedlight.

both the D90 and D300s use the same AF-assist illuminator. those "red lights" are typical of Nikon Speedlight AF-assist lamps

:dunno: maybe there was some sort of red gel or filter on the AF-assist lamp? :bsmilie:

that's strange... you able to get hold of that same D300s to do some conclusive tests?

Anyway I can check with daredevil123's D300s on saturday morning.

i see.. thanks for your info anyway.. i'm pretty sure i did not mount a flashgun cause i never used one lol

The AF-assist lamp in the speedlights really helps with auto-focus accuracy and speed, as the lights form a grid-like pattern. It's a God-send, sometimes...

lol... seriously can we stick a red filter on the illuminator? someone wanna experiment it? haha
