i agree that the zoom ring can be a little tight compared to others. each lens have its own characteristic, the user would just have to work with it.

Noted that 17/55 does not focus accurately between 17 to 35mm, often manual focusing get better result .. Used on d70 to d300s and got this conclusion .. Fyi only

Really!?... Didn't notice this when I was using it for a very short while. Some shots I took I know didn't turn out sharp, I thought I should attribute it to handshake and not high enough ISO and Shutter speed under shady conditions... I assume you're using Center AF point and not the points on the edges?

Yes .. Center or not, doesnt matter. Try this ... At 17 mm focus on an object, see the focus distance marking on the len, then u zoom to 55 mm and refocus, NOW see the focus distance marking on the len. U will notice the result is different although u are focusing on the same item at different zoom length.

So how to overcome this ? FOCUS LOCK method, if i remember what its call.
Always zoom to 55mm to 'half press' shutter button to lock focus (do not release), then zoom out to your desire zoom length and press shutter to shoot. You will be surprise this method work on 17/55 (not all len).

But i get so sian doing this, especially 17/55 zoom ring is so tight even nikon sg cant help me loosen it .. In the end i went for prime, 95% hit rate, ligjt and force me to think before i trigger happy just snap ... Hahha

Oh, I don't have this lens, but did get the chance to try it out... the tight ring is enough to put me off from thinking about it, as many of my shoots require long hours and I think I'd be rather p*ssed if the lens is slowing me down in getting that framing right. If I do get a chance to try it out the next time, I'll do what you've suggested.

But anyway, lets remind ourselves to get back on track - OT already! hahaha Sorry Mods!

Is there something that I missed? My 17-55 seems to have smooth zoom ring all the way either way (not tight at all). Miao, thanks for the tip, I tried and the focus works in "lock" (half press shutter button).

Wow, you must have a unique copy. I don't think we meant tight as in "so tight you need to use all your might", but it is definitely tighter than majority of the zoom lenses I've used... There are other lenses that falls into this category of tightness as well - 28-300VR is one I can think of.

When did you buy your copy? Maybe they may have tweaked the later batches to alleviate this problem.

Dun think later batch got fine tune the tightness. Its mostly likely to be very well used .. There's a loan set from nikon sg that is super super smooth and fluid, like no resistance at all ... Haha but its a set for loan to nps member .. I guess the only way it to wear it out yourself by turning it non stop for a week .. Haha ..

my photos turned out to be in focus, although i didnt look at the focusing distance window. perhaps we define the term "focus accurately" differently. :dunno:

Try my method, i bet u get sharper images. Of course in good light condition, example outdoor, 17/55 should not have any problem, but indoor poorer light condition u will notice the difference.

Btw i tried this len on d70, 80, 90, 200, 300, d700 .. Same result

I got it from my friend. It should be 2.5 years old. The tightness of the zoom ring is same as that for the 70-300 which I compared this morning.

hmmm... that explains the smoothness of the ring. It is well used! hehehe Good anyway, helps you clear your mind of that irritating framing hurddle each time you need to hurry a shot.

Haha, my friend spent some time selecting at Cathay. What I have is tack sharp lens! No complaints except from people in the photos because I am lazy to PP (records everything on their faces which they like to hide hehehe)

I have one with "Nikon" logo on the leather surface. I suppose those from the strap brands (Matin, Optech, etc) should be fine.
