Any one here using D90+tamron 17-50mm f2.8 BIM no VC, what setting is best for this combination? Is it a good combination?

Would love to help, but unfortunately your question is not specific, and thus I have no idea how to answer it.
As Cowseye mentioned, you do need to grasp some basic photography concepts and then apply them to the individual situation.
You should then be able to answer your 2 questions on your own

Think of it as learning how to drive, then operating any passenger car is simply a matter of applying those skills.

I don't know what you are doing and exploring, so how to give tips or tricks aside from what you're doing?

as cowseye and ZCA mentioned, "which settings" depends on your shooting conditions, not your setup. how one decides on the settings will base on the limitations of the camera+lens and the conditions of what you're trying to shoot, not the other way around. i can say "shoot wide open always for portrait to get nice bokeh" but if you're in the studio those might not be the most ideal settings.

Reading this reminds me of "The Big Shot" episode one last year. Given a 18-55mm to be use in manual focus mode... You are pretty limited in the technology department, and all you have at that point in time is what knowledge had you gather thus far. Thus the best answer would be practise often in different situation, trial and error if you are not sure (experience will gives you less trials and less errors), hope of the the best when you click that shutter button.

what setting is best depends on what you shoot, what time you shoot, ambient light available when you shoot, how you want the results to show in your photo, etc....
any working lens pairing off with a working dslr is a good combination...??

Thanks guys.. Really learn a lot.. I rarely shoot raw only when i find something really of my interest.. I always shoot on jpeg,fine,large.. Coz im lazy to do PP for hundreds of photos everytime.. Sometimes, i set to raw+jpeg too. I saw some related articles for settings for landscape, portraits, sports.. But haven't really tried all..and so i seek for settings that you have tried thats best for jpeg mode.. I also do manual WB preset everytime, before i shoot in any locations.. If only i can bring my cam everyday, i would..

your question is quite vague. did you mean someone who has had experience with all four lenses?

i only have the 18-200 among the four so i cant comment on the other lenses. but based on your choices, it seems you are looking for an all-around travel lens.

28-300 on DX will have longer reach but will also be a bit tight on the wide end. i believe the 28-300 is not a DX lens, and on FX its focal length is roughly the equivalent FOV of an 18-200 on DX (1.5x crop factor).

Used the Nikkor 18-200 and it was great. Loved it when i was travelling.

when you first started off, it is a very steep learning curve and you can't wait to get into "action" with you camera. I have been through this just like you. My simple advice is you won't get anywhere if your basic aren't there. I was checking out the exif data of the photos quite often in the beginning. I am lucky to have a good friend to straighten this out of me. Aperture, shutter speed, iso, exposure compensation, etc... find out what it is, what it does, how these are related or work with each other. It will help you to go a long long way in any of the genre that you choose to pursue. I did bought a set of books called The Digital Photography Book by Scot Kelby. These books just gave you the settings for many situations but it didn't really teach much. It is good for people who just got his/her first dslr and can't wait to get started aka learning to fly without learning to walk first. 3 volumes that is about 2 inch thick. This is why if you can understand, we can't or won't be able to give you the settings. Now this books are just book ends in my bookshelf. PS. btw I am still learning to walk...

Do you own the D90 with the kit lens 18-105mm?
If you do and often shoot at 105mm, then possibly a 'superzoom' lens might be of interest to you. Otherwise I reckon the 18-105 is hard to beat, especially by the 4 lenses you shortlisted

18-270 is like the one lens to rule them all. IQ not half bad and almost covers most of the range.

Hehehe ok but I prefer to shoot with primes.
To me, I feel it's a bit pointless to buy an interchangeable lens camera, then buy a lens so as to minimize changing lenses

I don't mind, getting a superzoom - STRICTLY for travelling (shooting everything under the sun). PROVIDED the quality of images is good. And leave the rest of the other lenses at home... Afterall, I'm still switching lenses, between home and overseas usage... LOL... But personally, I'd prefer an UWA and probably a light-weight zoom plus a middle prime for overseas trips.

Good point. 55-200 is pretty stellar.
So it's a toss-up between 35/1.8 and 50/1.8G

The 55-200mm VR is a good lens. I'm hanging on to it, no matter wat! Haha
