hey guys..think the problem lies with the user (dats me)..lack of technical knowledge..

i was out for dinner at clarke quay..and i took some photos of my son..turned out to be quite okay when he's still..;p

mn101k.jpg

iandao. the sharpest point in the photo seems to be right at the tip of the cap just above the forehead. The details there looks to be the sharpest.

The chanel pic looks good.

I think it is more of where the focusing point is (which is decided either by you or your camera). Your lens should be fine.

check out pg 56 in your manual.

talking about NOKTON lens, anyone have the NOKTON 25mm f/0.95 lens???

until now, i only have the kit lens (18-105mm) attached to my D90.
since i am taking photographs of toys and then some (small objects), i have come upon a slight roadblock called 'macro'.

reading through the macro sub forum:
5. What is the recommended macro camera equipment setup ?

a. DSLR/SLR camera
Type of Setup:
- Camera + Dedicated Macro lens
- Camera + Extension tube + Macro lens (for macro > 1:1 )
- Camera + Telezoom lens + closeup filter (e.g. +2, +4)
- Camera + Extension tube + Telezoom/prime lens
- Camera + Extension tube + Telezoom/prime lens + closeup filter
- Camera + Normal lens + Coupling Ring + Reversed prime lens (for macro > 1:1 )
- Camera + Reverse Lens Adapter + Reversed lens (for macro > 1:1 )
- Camera + Bellows + Macro lens (for macro > 1:1 )

Recommended Add-on:
- External Flash (if camera comes with hot-shoe) with Diffuser (provide soft lighting effect)
- Tripod (good for still life)

cheapskate that i am, is it possible for me to do a (decent) macro shot if i just get a close up filter (is there one that will fit the 18-105mm in the first place)? *do note that my current 'macro' addiction is only for toy cars and other small still life. no insects, no flora, no other things just yet ...

i am getting a 50mm 1.8 soon (hopefully, sooner), so that means i would be able to use extension tubes, but i'll cross that bridge when i get there. in the meantime, it's safe to say that the built in macro mode does not really work for me (because the darn pop-up flash keeps popping up). any brighter ideas?

:dunno:

thanks!

i usually use Av or M. But somehow, i can't get the sharp "up-close" feel of the photo. when i use the camera's macro mode, the pop-up flash opens by default.

Using macro mode likely makes no difference, since the lens can't focus any closer :)
50/1.8 MFD also not very close. You might need to get something like 60mm micro or Tamron 90mm macro to get the "up close" feel. Not sure what you mean exactly by that. Haha.

My poor man's way using 18-105 kit lens @105mm +4 diopter
F11
ISO 200

focused at x mm (minimum focus distance)
some cropping

I don't have my camera with me now, but if I'm not mistaken, the shooting mode dial has a macro (flower) symbol. Doesn't seem to do anything ;)

I never bothered to RTFM about macro function. hehehehe

Hello wanna to ask which shop offer the cheapest D90 now.
Price information, you gotta search yourself I'm afraid. Look up the pricelist for reputable shops and start calling/emailing/visiting :)

Then update the person who maintains the pricelist. Thanks!

Hmmm funan I only know of Alan photo slr and tk photo nia. Okok the price rougly how much.

thanks for the replies.

haven't actually compared the shots using the macro mode (yes, there is a macro mode on the D90 - cheers!) to regular zoom yet. because i don't really like shooting with the pop-up flash (so i don't go through with shooting in macro mode) ... but will try this over the weekend. my schedule is crap this week.

@parky, will try that.

sometimes i do get the shots i want, just can't get too close. "up-close" like you can see the paint scratches on a 1:43 scale car. :sweatsm:

not delving into macro just yet. but not leaving it out for consideration. maybe someone wants to lend me a macro lens? ;)

cheers!

can try prime lens (eg 50/1.8) with extension tube. DOF is very thin though.

I agree, I'm using a 35mm f1.8, the result is very good. thought a 35mm f1.4 is better or the best would be a 85mm

any users of the below lens here?

Nikon AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED DX

Is this lens good or there's a comparable lens in terms of picture quality as well as price from tokina, tamron or sigma ?
