Did you turn off the autofocusing light? I did encounter this, more prominently in low light after I had turned it off.

The focus assist light is always on.. it's ok, i'm going to reset the camera, see if it improve.. tq.

hi guys. just bought my d90 on the 23rd.

sadly, during a party on the 31st i knocked my lens pretty hard against a table. what i would like to know is how easily is a lens damaged? or how can i tell if my lens is damaged? it zooms fine and everything but i'm just worried cos its a new toy :/

ps: its a kit lens 18-105mm vr

From my experience, diaphragm blades r the first things that get dislodged when lens suffer impact. Even so, autofocus and zoom may all be ok and feel normal. So do a physical check that your diaphragm blades did not get dislodged. :)

Hard to tell... Most lenses are not that difficult to get damaged, unless you managed to drop it from a significant height. You'll know if your lens is not performing as it should... can't stop down, can't focus, funny really weird sounds. First and foremost - check if anything has been broken - especially the front and rear elements (glass surfaces).

I've seen a DSLR dropped from a table to a parquet floor without any problems (maybe some slight bruise or dent or hairline crack, etc)...

Physically see through the lens... There's a "switch / trigger" on the lens you can push to open / close the aperture blades for physical checks...

even if you reset the camera, i know the default setting of the AF-assist light is ON. please check the custom menu settings to turn it off.

cheers!

Just checking, 18-105 is plastic mounting?

If you get one, be sure to check the mounting, even if the outer physical look is okay.

yah... that is a no brainer answer.;)

if you are talking about the Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote and Nikon MC-DC2 Remote Release Cord. The wireless one, you have to activate the wireless function and have to point it at the sensor on the left side of the camera. The remote cord has a switch like thing to hold down the button which is good for bulb mode long exposure.
how do we actually activate bulb, > Manual mode + flash button + command dial? I remember seeing it before while meddling. In what scenarios do we need to use bulb mode?

not sure if you know what bulb mode is. From your question it sounds like you don't.

Bulb mode is just a fancy name for manual control of the shutter opening duration.
Camera allows automatic control from 1/2000seconds (some makes/models have 1/4000s) up to 30seconds. Anything more than 30 seconds, and you need bulb mode.

To activate bulb mode, you have to be in manual exposure mode. Adjust the shutter speed beyond 30" and you'll see 'bulb'.
Without any other accessory, you need to hold down the shutter release button for however long you wish the shutter to be open.
With long exposures (eg, few minutes), that is not practical. Will get fingers cramp.

Ah yes soli soli.
Confused myself as I have been figuring put some flash issue prior to this qn. Saw a 'bulb' word and mistook it for some flash qn... Heee

And with this I learnt something new again! Thanks! ;)

Hey guys.
I'm getting my first D90 this weekend as an early birthday present and it'll be my first DSLR. (:
Been looking into photography for a couple of months now, and I always thought that owning a DSLR would be a distant dream, but it's coming true now. :D

Really excited to be part of the D90 family, and I hope to learn more from you guys. (:
