are you saying that on the d3100, it adds auto distortion control even if you shoot raw, as opposed to the d90 where you shoot raw then have to manually do correction after the fact and get a jpeg output?

i presume that the auto distortion control works the same way as it works in d5000. it affects both NEF and jpeg, and after u had taken the shot.

 it will work for both NEF and jpeg files, but after correction will the NEF files still be NEF or processed into jpeg? if so, kinda defeats the purpose of shooting RAW.. :dunno:

Correction is a form of processing as well. I haven't tried this feature on my d90, but I'm pretty sure the output will be JPG :)

not raw?? That will be disappointing.
I wonder what about third party lens like sigma?

to me, the whole idea of RAW is that it is the unmanipulated version, for you to do the tweaks as you deem fit. To apply some correction (WB, distortion, etc) to an image and still be able to save it as a RAW, that's a no-no...

As for Sigma or 3rd party, I don't see any on the list, do you? ;)

i believe it might work the same way as how the in-cam picture control settings work, that is, it will be applied into jpg if u convert the raw files to jpg using view nx or capture nx, but doesnt work if u load the raw files directly into other photo processing software like lightroom.

doesnt seem to affect third party lenses, since the manual stated it will only work on nikon's D and G lenses. some1 else made the same observation:

hmmm.... I would actually prefer my images to come out the way as our eyes see... undistorted
oh well...

at least I have tried correcting it during pp with really satisfying results....

Finally I made the decision to move from my hardworking D40 to a D90. Just bought a pre-owned D90 body yesterday. :)

welcome to the club! Time to change your signature then.

I'm trying to compile a list of FAQs. Perhaps as a new D90 owner, you can help me by listing down the questions that you think of... perhaps 10 - 15 questions?
I can use those as a guideline to get started.

Thanks. Will certainly have questions when I start shooting with the D90.

How about compiling a list of tips from the experienced users, things not found in the user manual?

Sure. This is the must-visit thread.

Good initiative!

For starters, here are mine:

1) What is the purpose of exposure delay function and how to set it?
2) Differences between ML-L3 wireless remote and MC-DC2 remote control cable.

Hi all

Got a D90.... finally ;)

Happily molesting "her" and shooting with both kit lens and 70-200mm for past few days that forgot to post :sweatsm:. Also busy reading up to answer wife's questions on what is this dial for, what does this button do, blah, blah blah... (yes, she doesn't real the manual).

Will be hunting for a 50mm this couple of days and look forward in joining you guys soon!

wah... bully me :complain:

hehehe

I must check how to set the exp delay function. Forgot which menu number it is.

No hands-on experience with MC-DC2 remote as well. Any info to share? It's the wired remote, right?

No worries lah, When the FAQ is up, I'll try to help out to fill in the blanks... :bsmilie: I have both devices. Yup, wired remote. There are cheaper options, MC-DC2 is more for Nikon Fan-boys... lolz!

welcome to the club!

maybe you'd like to join in the TCSS thread HERE for anything under the sun. Have been told by mods to try and keep the discussions on this thread centred around the camera and its operation, etc. Basically tips and tricks.

Exp delay is under custom settings>d10 ;)

My contribution to the FAQs list:
1. What does AF-S, AF-C and AF-A mean and what do they do?
2. How does the commander for d90 work?
3. How to get rid of that annoying light/beep when focusing?

Just a few i've seen floating around. Will add more when i remember. Will also chip in info on some questions if thats ok
