ZCA, i think u are "lost"
i think he is asking do he need to switch to Manual on the body and lens to get manual focusing

the ans is no need. either the body or lens will do. body will be at the "corner" of the lens mount.

btw AF-S, u can over ride it by turning it straight. take note, the rest cannot.
not all AFS lenses allow manual override of focusing... :)

anyway I read back and confused myself further :) I think I gotta put it aside for now.

M/A is actually AutoFocus with Manual Priority. means after you AF you can still do MF to fine tune your focusing. IIRC, A mode will not allow you to manually focus after you have focused using AF. correct me if i'm wrong

ya ya... you are correct

anyway just to clarify... the last couple of pages about A and M is talking about the
AUTO-FOCUS modes, not aperture-priority and manual exposure modes...

wah lao bro! YOU OF ALL PEOPLE NV READ USER MANUAL?!?! next time we meet I print out the page highlight it for you. It's okay to do tt. I remember reading it before.

Hi Smile, this is what i get from manual p59
"Using Manual Focus With AF Lenses"
Be sure the camera focus-mode selector is set to M when using manual focus with AF lenses.
Focusing manually with the focus-mode selector set to AF could damage the lens.

For my case, I do read up, just that I don't really understand, im really new \^^/

yup, u are right.
not a must, but depends on how ex is the filter.

also for "look"

imagine, a 50mm having a 52mm filter put a step up ring of 67mm, it will be so "funny" (67-52= 15. 15/2 = 7.5mm around) and how u going to cap and bring ard, most prob u will crack the 67mm filter before u know it.

haha point taken.. get a 52mm for 50mm lens.. ;p

The term 'AF' is specific, and doesn't refer to all auto-focus lenses.
For example, the 50/1.8 is denoted AF 50mm f/1.8D
whereas the D90's kit lens is denoted AF-S 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G

Remove the lens from your D90 and flick the switch on the camera body to M. You'll notice the screw-drive retract.

woah woah woah... hold your horses there...
you can ONLY do a manual override of the focusing if your lens is designed that way.
For Nikkor lenses, the focus-mode switch will be denoted M---M/A (or M --- A/M. Can't remember exactly)
only then can you override.
If the switch is denoted M---A, then please don't try. The clutch will not slip.

Never try to do manual focus on a lens like AF 50/1.8D when your camera's switch is at A.

I tried once. I AF liao, then like not very happy with it, tried to turn, wow, no 'biting point'. Totally tight. After tt, I don't dare to try it again liao. I scared...

relax, the comment tt you quoted wasn't aimed at you. My iron sight was aimed at jeezuin. :) Actually, sometimes I also don't understand the manual until I go back and read it a few times. I'm a slow learner.

Just to clarify,

Camera Body on MF, lens on A/M, can do MF after AF right?

Camera Body on MF, lens on MF, only can MF

Camera Body on AF, lens on MF, can it MF after AF?

don't don't.... I know it's a cheap lens, but the thing you're straining against is the AF motor INSIDE YOUR D90....
best to play safe.

For lenses with the switch marked "M/A --- M":

  • Camera at A, lens at M/A = auto-focus with manual override
  • Camera at A, lens at M = manual focus only
  • Camera at M, lens at M/A = manual focus only
  • Camera at M, lens at M = manual focus only

which is what I stated earlier
as long as both switches are not at A, it is manual focus only

i think we all drop / stop this A/ M / AF or watever mode. come out le then show/ demo. else wait really spoilt the focusing....

Nikon is made of sterner stuff than that! :)

If don't feel comfortable with this whole M/A --- A ---- M thingy, do try to come down to our outing. One of us will be more than happy to demo... :)

Ok. Now then I remember I once tested all the combinations. Only A---A does AF. Sorry about tt. :embrass:

As for the demo, if anyone is looking for an excuse to upgrade to FF or get a new body, we can help you with tt excuse!
