AP has it.. both body and kit, as of today :)

i am owner of d300, amazing camera. but i suggest u get d90, its almost as good as d300 (only diff is autofocus a bit slower, and non weather proof body, slower FPS). However, size wise and featurewise, almost the same, in fact its better coz it has MOVIE MODE!!!

d90 and a 18-200 lens and get out there take pics and post! Have fun most importantly :)

I am also a D300 user (just bought!), and also faced the same problem as you.

And actually, I thought D90 and D300 shared the same sensor and image quality when i went for D300.

I guessed most hobbyist like us will try to justify why they go for D90/D300, as they each have their pros and cons. At the end of the day, I went for the 20% faster focusing speed, better AF-C (continuous focus) because of the 51 point autofocus point tracking, better build and weather seal, better grip, SUPER easy switch between dynamic/center focusing without going into menu, 8 way control (compared to D90's 4), customized FUNC button, bigger viewfinder etc. The few additional buttons and small features add up to the $700 difference.

And not to forget, the D300 also comes with a fully licensed Capture NX software that let me edit my pictures easily, although I don't always use it when i take casual shots. The software itself worth S$150 at least.

Of course, D90 has a (slightly?) better image quality and more in camera editing option. And most importantly, the movie mode (I also wanted that!).

So after taking the pros and cons, is it worth for you to pour in 50% more money ($700 now)? It is really down to your financial mean and how much you are willing to compromise.

Everybody wants the best of both world- better image quality, faster speed, easy to change settings. I thought I would like to have the Capture NX software and I can dig my pocket a little bit deeper to have the extra weight in hand and the faster speed so that I will have less frustration of missing a shot-- So i went for D300 instead.

Ok to be honest I am a newbie in the world of photography but I just love it!!

I became interested when I saw a few of my friends in the office who bought a Canon 450D, I was out of myself as they showed me fantastic pictures and I just wanted to buy a CAM and get started, I went to our local shops here in Singapore and started to look around for a Canon 450D (USA CANON EOS Rebel XSi 450D) as I was convinced that my colleagues made the right choice so I could not be wrong !!

Well I made several shops and just was not satisfied with the canon even by not having a clue about cameras don't ask me why as I don’t even know myself, I was tired and went for my last visit to a shop called challenger and again asked for a canon 450D what a stubborn ass I am... and started to test it take some pics bla bla bla... until the sales girl presented me with the Nikon D90, I was laughing since there was a huge price difference and thought she would like to sell me an expensive camera worth here in Singapore S$1900 for a cam with the 55-185 lens against the competitive S$1200 for the whole kit Camera Bag, Extra Memory, Flash, Lens, Memory Reader, Tripod that Canon were offering.

But then miracle, it was love at the first touch
I knew this was the cam for me it just felt right and good to have such an amazing camera tailor made just for me, that’s how it felt!!! And of course I just bought it!! Out of my budget hahahaa !!!!

Well the same day I took it to the office as I had to go to work as my working hours are from 3PM - 12AM and believe it or not my colleagues who initially talked about the fantastic Canon 450D just went MAD with my cam and loved it and so do I...

What I want to say is that Canon 450 D is a great cam but if you really want something fantastic you have to go for NIKON D90.

did nikon pay you for it? haha.. i was suppose to get a 350D bit out of stock so that'show i ended up with nikon. now i use either of these 2 but i must say D300 is the one to get.

Hey Spiky,

nice listening to your love story! hahaha. Make me feel like buying a D90 too!

I supposed everybody has different taste and requirement, some like gentle and innocent girl, some like hot babes. At the end of the day, is really what you like and need, haha. ;p

Buy the D90 if you do not use the extra function on D300.

Money saved could get you a decent lens.

haha.. u guys are hilarious!!!

yeah.. im still thinking about it heh.... i have the feeling in my heart for the d300 but all my frens tell me that i dun use the extra functions of the d300 and advised me to get the d90 instead.

I went to funan and peninsula today and some of the shops there have stock! though the prices vary.

what is the standard price for a d90 body?

Just asked yesterday at Lucky plaza, $1380 for D90 body.

That's why I always say, try not to write off the other major brands like Sony, Olympus, Pentax even though you might have set your heart on Nikon or Canon. Most important is how you feel at home with the camera. Go to the shop and hold it and see if you like the handling. No point going for what someone else likes. You are going to be the one who use it ultimately, so you should be the one who feels at home with it. :) Different strokes for different folks.

Hi,
I am new to this DSLR thing, and I am curious of the term weather proofing of the D300.
Can it be used in the rain? snow? dessert?
And how about D90, can it be used in those conditions?

I used the D70s in a drizzle before. Just cary a cloth and wipe off the water before it seeps in.

Hi
I was once also like u. Thinking of getting either D90, D300 or D700. Getting a D90 is because of its price and having almost the same function as D300. Getting a D300 is because feel some other extra function but news saying that the D300 replacement coming out. In the end, i ended getting the D700 because I wanted to get a body that will last me at least a few year. I had change from Oly to Canon then lastly to Nikon. Reason, Oly has nice colour output but the focusing is abit slow for me. Canon has fast focusing and good noise control but the colour output is not what i wan. So in the end, did some research on these 3 models and finally decided on the D700. So far still learning on how to handle the function as it is difference from the canon system. But the output is what i wan. So u should consider on which body base on are u going to upgrade to a better higher end body in future. And u might wan to consider what kind of lens u wan to get. Prime or zoom lens. Hope this could help u.

Hi

I think its a good decision to go for the D90, IMHO, if you are new, its better to play around with the D90, by the time you are profficient perhaps there would be upgraded versions of the D300 ...

But as you can see there are many different opinions between the D90 & D300, both have their pros & cons. I personally am hoping to get the D300 by next week (hoping to sell off my D70s first to justify getting it) cos I feel it is a more rugged camera and I don't need the 'movie' mode on the D90 as I feel still and video cannot be on one convergent device for now.

End of the day, it boils down to budget & your purpose of getting the cam ... then comes the decision on buying lenses ... plenty of good info here & generally helpful people.

Anyway, good luck & have fun.

Cheers

Lordjim

PS - I am no pro although I have been photographing almost 20 years (including 5 years Digital) now ... just my 2.14 cents (plus GST).
