D90 - Dont understand P Mode

yes, the built in flash will not pop out in P mode if the light level is low.

and yes, that's how user change the combination of aperture and shutter speed setting

but i observed that you can change only for few values of shutter speed or aperture...sometimes it wont change it at all...in these scenarios you switch to the mode required ie either A or S depending on the requirement.

OIC, now i get it & that's why the semi-pro cams like D200, D300 & ups still hv the P mode to give the user a choice of a semi-auto mode in P instead of only A,S,M mode. Cheers:thumbsup:

:think: hmm interesting, i knew this all the time ie the max synch speed but never thought it might be the factor..

but tell me, if i am not using the flash, then why does it give me only few combinations of SHUTTER + APP ?

If i switch to, say S mode i can use shutterspeed faster than the one given in P mode...

I am totally at a loss when using the camera "P" mode...i tried reading the manual but its nothing much on this mode.

Can someone explain how actually we make use of the "P" mode? :dunno:

AUTO mode = ultimate point and shoot, camera selects shutter,aperture,ISO,white balance,picture control,focus mode etc.. for you..will even pop up the flash if needed (in d5k there's an auto mode with no flash)
P mode = A mode + S mode combined, camera will only select shutter and aperture for you to give you a correct exposure, the rest of the settings you can configure..but since you are using an advanced model and has a dedicated dial for both aperture and shutter, even in P mode, you can still select your aperture and shutter making it function like the M mode overriding the aperture and shutter that were suggested by the camera..

P mode is "programmed", the idea of having it is to limit it Everyday Situation, will not go extreme end of aperture or shutter speed, cause the camera does not know what are you shooting at.

From the read here some ppl seem why do we need a auto mode or a p mode in the dslr. It really sad to see ppl askin this question. So to say when usin a dslr one must use a A, S OR a M mode to shoot. .

auto & P modes are sometimes for renting the camera to a newbie fren who does not know how to use other modes
just dial it to auto and tell him/her to look thru viewfinder, press the shutter button..

Had a chance to try out this P* mode during a church wedding today and it worked jus like the bro here said it would diff A with diff S

did you guys know that Joe Buissink, a very well-known professional celebrity wedding photographer uses P mode and AWB too...

and to him M is really the "Master" mode...

P mode has been around for a long long time. Some more advanced PnS and prosumers also have the P mode. There are some people asking why a P mode is there when in A mode, the metering system will set the shutter speed as well. Some are asking why there are only a few combinations available in P mode.

- AUTO mode is there for you to shoot very fast without thinking. Everything is set for your. Even flash (auto pop up). In some models/brands, you cannot use EV compensation .Some models/brands the ISO will not be settable and stuck in auto ISO. (RTM to confirm as differs from model to model)

- P mode is semi-auto. And it is there for you to shoot fast without thinking too much. It will give you a only few combinations of Aperture value and Shutter speed. So when you turn the dial to cycle through the options, you do not have to turn too much to reach something you want to use. ISO you have to set. Flash you have to pop up yourself.

- If you want a precise Aperture value or want the ability to fine tune the A value, then switch to A mode.

- If you want a precise shutter speed or want the ability to fine tune the Shutter speed, then switch over to S mode.

It is that simple. What is the point of giving too many combinations in P mode? You will have to turn the dial like crazy, and just might as well use A or S mode.

i also realized that in "P" mode i can change all other parameters also like metering etc...Each day is a new learning

P can be used in situations where it is either you get the shot or you get nothing at all. No time for you to think of the settings or the moment is gone. P is auto set by camera for anti-shake and reasonable DOF in this instance.
