wont pass the $2k mark i believe...

yeah thought of going 3rd party, but theb since it's gonna be my first DSLR just abit apprehensive abt going for 3rd party lens... it seems from reviews that Nikon has more issues w 3rd party than Canon

btw what's the current street price for Nikkor 18-200mm lens...

i checked the the Price Guide thread and the price in Mar is around $1100... that's not too bad leh. cos the Body only price is about $1300 of add up less than $2500.... but that's provided can get D90 body only

Hi tunge, may i know why you prefer the D90 + 18-200mm in stead of the standard kit that come with 18-105mm??

Is there any major diff in image quality between them?

I am new to DSLR and planning to get D90 also, was considering these two lense as well.

yeah the main reason is for the extra reach that up to 200mm which i think would be really useful... was at the zoo over the weekend with my Canon SX10 and the more zoom is definitely a must.

also from a few reviews the Nikkor 18-200mm has a better build quality. as for IQ seems like abt the same.

most beliefs are fact tat nikkor lens focus faster than 3rd party lens by tat little bit...
my d90 bought wit a tamron 28-75 2.8 n nikkor 50 1.8 due to the fact tat the price of a nikkor 24-70 2.8 can get me those 3 items wit ard 200 to spare...
the tamron 18-270mm gives u extra 70mm zoom n comes wit VC..theres a review in clubsnap u might wanna check it out...

or get the kit n get a cheap 55-200 or 70-300...

that time when i buy during it show,
they got package of
d90 kit 18-105mm , add $300+ to upgrade lens to 18-200mm .

sep is coming, another similar show coming
but dunno got nikon booth or not .

however, be prepared to buy d90 kit with $1988+- .
if not i rather u buy outside body only + 18-200mm lens, cheaper this way.

oops, my bad. its not a 18-200mm as i thought.
its a 55-200mm purchase with purchase for $349,
at it show 2009 (aka, lastest nikon booth for such show).

Wah, sb900 is about 80$ cheaper from outside (I got quote from MS color $670$ cheaper than what they mention on this sheet $789).
Anyway i am going to buy SB600 (about 400$ cheaper ;)).

i guess they meant 18-55 and 55-200 lenses. that was the package at the show and is also available as "dual lens kit" with other shops like HN, AP.

I was recommended to go for D90 Body + 18-200mm.
The price most probably is around 2K.

Beside there's more zoom for this lense, any other advantages? The salesman said 18-200mm is more valuable to sell in future.

My the other friend said the kit 18-105mm is better than 18-200mm after his trying.

Any idea?

"better" can mean alot of things, so must ask ur friend what he meant by "better"

could be price wise? 18-105kit is about $800 cheaper than 18-200kit
could be weight? ur friend prefer a lighter carry around lens
build? both have VR and SWM, but "correct me if i'm wrong" 18-200 is metal mount whereas 18-105 is plastic mount
IQ?

yup, 18-105 is plastic mount and the 18-200 is metal mount. it is the reason why more valuable.

I am still finding out the difference of them. I did asked my friend why he said better, he asked me to try on both lense. Don't think is the weight matter.

The difference of these 2 item, is it the 18-200 can shoot farer? other than this?

Need to find out more before I decided which to buy...

18-200 is not veri sharp from 135mm onwards if i'm not wrong...

personally,i would go for 16-85 & 55-200.

well the main reason why i'm opting for the 18-200 is simply the extra zoom it can offer me and that is where the main bulk of the extra dollars is going to (the extra 95mm focal length)

build quality wise, the 18-200mm is arguably better quality.

btw ur why ur friend so funny one, can't he just explain what he think instead of asking u to go try out urself

as for IQ have not tested the 2 lens myself but reviews of the 2 lenses have been mixed and my guess it the difference is not significant.

I moved up from a 18-70 + 55-200VR combo to a 18-200VR. Never regret the decision at all!

Yes, i lose the superior sharpness and quick af of the 18-70 but i gain versatility which is the selling point. The 55-200VR is no better than the 55-200 range of the 18-200VR...serious...

Friends have poked fun and chided me for using a "lazy man's lens" while they use their f2.8s and L lenses but I'm able to get most of the shots most of the time cause i simply DO NOT NEED TO CHANGE LENS!!! On top of that, I get VR throughout the whole focal range.

Edit: Seriously there's no diff to the IQ of the 18-55 + 55-200vr combo VS the 18-200vr in REAL WORLD USAGE. If you simply need the best IQ, get the f2.8 zooms.
