so left AF no issued already ?

Haven't collected it yet. I believe should be fixed based on other feedback here. Will update after I tested it.

remember to test not only the left AF but all. in case they fix one but break others

OK, as promised, did some tests on the left, centre, right, and some other random AF points. All seem acceptable after sending the D800E in for NSC to check. Below are 100% crops of the images shot at f/1.4. Evaluate the centre columns because those were where I focused on, and since my test sheet is not perfectly flat. The right AF appears a tad off, but it could well be my error.

My simple set up for the test.

Hope these help.

Good luck. I am sure it will be fine.

Had the D800E for a few days now. i come from an APSC cam, and the first thing that wowed me was the file size. its about 20 mb for jpegs and 80 for raw. guess i'll be needing more memory cards...

that aside, i find the focusing a bit slower than i expected, but it might be due to the afs lens, i gotta try it with my 50 1.8D sometime...LV focusing is v fast though.

the dynamic range is amazing. i can pull so much detail from the shadows, and i am very impressed with the highlight recovery, its just amazing...and of cse theres the image resolution, which is fantastic...

this is a picture taken with the d800e, it showcases the dynamic range v well.

thats some very funky colors you're getting there...
some of the trees looks like they are still in deep shadows, any luck pulling information out of those?

yes, u can get much more by pulling blacks in LR4, and if u really want, use the brush tool to pull some more. the possibilities seem endless.

First, congrats & welcome to the club. As for file size, when shooting RAW, just choose Nikon's lossless compressed option; and it won't be 80 MB. Should be around 40+ MB. From what I read, there is absolutely no loss in image quality by choosing the lossless compressed vs uncompressed. In fact, Nikon already took out the uncompressed option and then put it back to satisfy some consumers, according to this guy. See the link below and scroll down to "NEF (RAW) Recording" under "Uncompressed" subheading.

As for memory cards, $80+ gets you 64GB 30MB/s Sandisk card and $125 gets you 64GB 45MB/s. I never found I needed any faster ones as I don't do much burst photography. One of these SD cards alone allows you to shoot nearly 770-800 RAW lossless compressed shots...plenty enough for me.

good pointers! thanks for sharing:)

Got my D800E on last thursday. After testing over the weekend, I found my copy comes with the left auto focus problem. After fine tuned with 24mm, both center n right focus pts are right on target. Extreme left focus is consistently back focusing.

Just send it in. Will be fixed in no time. But odd that after so long Nikon hasn't fixed all new batches coming out of the factory.

have these two to share, both taken with the Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Distagon lens. It is the heaviest lens in the entire ZF/ZF.2 line up, with a very unique duality.

At maximum aperture, it is optimized for bokeh and a sharp distinction between focus and defocus, at the expense of CA and other color abberations.

By f/4 to f/5.6 for landscape work and stuff, it becomes razor sharp like the 21mm Distagon.

Here both taken at f/1.4, and processed to my taste. It is a lens that will rarely, if ever be considered amidst the stable of the Nikon 35/1.4 AF-S, Canon 35/1.4 L, Leica 35/1.4 FLE, but it sure is a unique contribution on Zeiss' optical part.

hey folks,

anyone w D800E took a photo in pitch dark with the highest ISO?
How is tt like?

Tks!

Cool pix!!
I find it to be too large to be carried around together with its siblings (i mainly do 35/2 - 50/2 - 100/2)
the 35mm F/2 continued to be my choice at the 35mm Focal length...

Shot with Nikon 50mm F1.4D @ F1.4, ISO 3200.

No sharpening done. Just some adjusting of contrast and brightness, lastly re-size.
