I love the Movie portion, but...it has no AF during "filming"...need MF skill here.
Also, I am wondering the mentioned MPEG is it MPG2 or 4 and how much memory is needed to record 1 min of footage...
It's M-JPEG.

according to imaging-resource.com, the file sizes are
"Approximate maximum file sizes for two of the modes are 588MB for the 1,280x720-size movies, and up to 2GB for the 640x424 movies."
and the recording limits:
"1280x720 (16:9), 640x424 (3:2), and 320x216 (3:2). Recording times are limited to five minutes for HD mode, and 20 minutes for the latter two modes."
So it translates to about 100+mb per minute...hmm, good thing that SD cards are cheap now a days.![]()
so ... r u still eyeing the d300?![]()
wow.... movie on a DSLR.... what will they think of next?
any idea on the pricing and when will reach singapore?
Go nikon go.... another "FIRST" !!!!
The D60 works fine for jets, you just have to adjust your shooting style. The focusing speed is not a problem for any of the cameras since the jets are never closer than infinity focus anyway, so you can just lock your focus there and be done with it. The thing you probably should be investing in is much faster, long focal length lenses. That is what will help you get the shot. Below are some pics I took of the Black Knights using a D60 and a (pretty slow) 18-200mm lens. Even with that you can do it.
When taking these kinds of shots the only short comming I can feel is the speed of the lens. Anything less than f/2.8 makes it hard to get the shot under these conditions. The camera body was no problem at all...
Hope this helps you!![]()
We'll have a walkman next. iSLR available at the nearest fruit stall near you. :bsmilie:
However I do agree that the movie mode is a value add although still abit weird.
kinda expect it will not inherit the 51AF-points system, other wise it almost a d300 in a d80 case. but at least they including 3d tracking algorithm. With D90 priced at US$1000, around $1300+, it is really very tempting...I have to see some sample from people here on the noise issue (as Nikon said the noise control is as good as D300) before I can decide. Anyway, my upgrade plan is to do it next year around March, so I have time to observe.
The only disappointment I have for D90 is the 11 AF points...I was hoping for the 51 AF points. But still, it looks like a very attractive upgrade.
No price for local yet, but in Nikon USA official website, it was stated US$1000 (ESP).![]()

True, true. However, my point was that, given the distance you are shooting at, you can generally stick with your focus locked to infinity (particularly at f8+) and hence don't need to worry about the speed of the AF.Not quite agree with that. For the recent NDP, it was like getting dark, so that is why you needed larger aperture lens. But for most other aviation shoot in bright daylight, at ISO200, and fixing the shutter speed at 1/1000s, I often get F8 or thereabout. So, you don't really need a fast lens or big aperture lens, but a long tele-lens. IMO, at least 300mm and even then, still need to crop. To me, it is important that the lens locks focus without fail and no focus hunting at all. Also, sharp enough after cropping.
I guess you will have plenty of opportunity to practice shooting this coming weekend with the Airforce openhouse at PLAB.
My friend used the AF-S70-300VR during the last Airshow and it worked pretty well for him.
Does it have the same sensor as the D300?
so will noise control be the same?
So now the official specs are out on the D90 and also an estimated selling price.
I will say that a D90 body cost about S$400 more than the current D80 body. So looking at the additional features over the D80, i would say that there are indeed a lot to justify the price for the D90.
1) Live View
2) Bigger and better screen
3) Video Capabilities
4) Probably slightly better ergonomics
5) Larger Megapixels.
So if each of the above is worth S$100, then you got a winner over the D80.

Let me add on
6) Expeed Processor
7) 3D tracking AF
8) Sensor Cleaning
9) Eye-Fi Capable
10) GPS Capable
11) Better sensor with in-chip noise control (claim to control noise as well as D300)
Any more I have missed out?![]()

I know this gonna sounds trivial... but I always find the OK button in the centre the most intuitive and logical.
But since almost all cameras perform almost equally well these days, other than pricing and brand loyalty, ergonomics I think, plays a vital part. IMHO.
