D80 or D90?

Nikon def score lots of point in terms of ergonomics, build quality and even the shutter sound plays a big part in making a decision in buying a DSLR.
I was pretty sure I got goose bumps after firing off a shot from my friend's D70 the first time.... :P

Different Sensor from D300. But Nikon stressed that the noise control is as good as D300 due to the same on-chip noise control technology. That is why this D90 is tempting me to save the $ from buying D300 next year.:)

I guess i'm in the same boat as you.
Either move up to D300 or D90.
Or.. we could get the next gen models.
I know there are some people who are still using the D70 after so many years..

You need very strong will to keep your cam for many years...by the way, I was thinking of letting go of my D80 when there is still warranty (mine has 3 yrs warranty from HN).

But this time having Video is very much different story as in the past, it was just still pic improvements only. Video is what I love a lot...:)

Or weak buying power.. :bsmilie:
But this will be the first generation video for a DSLR.
Should we wait for the next gen where the technology is more stable?

Lets wait a little longer to see the full review from Dpreview.:)

The problem is not with your camera and its abilities but your technique. Forget autofocus-you do not need it. Set the lens to infinity. Also, be sure to start panning along with the planes before you click. Use 1/1000 or above. In good sunny daylight, you should be able to do this even at F8 at iso 800. Depth of field will take care of infinity focus errors, if any, in the system. Spend the money saved on a body on a high quality lens.

i would say a good improvement from D70 to D90. D80 to D90 would be 50 50 thoughts

Actually I don't understand why some people make such a big deal about the lack of autofocus of the movie mode around the web. Is it really such a big deal or have they all become so accustomed to using AF that the very thought of using manual focus irks them like nothing else? Nikon comes out with a breakthrough, and people are slamming it because they are not offering enough. I personally think that the lack of AF will encourage people to see how good a movie clip they can squeeze out by using MF. I think that the satisfaction of using MF is something that AF cannot replicate. :)

having a cmos sensor on the d90 is definitively an improvement over the d80 ccd sensor.

They haven't seen how a video can be screwed because the AF starts hunting in hard to focus conditions.

Agreed. Imagine how silly the video would look if the AF illum lamp keeps flashing eveytime the AF system tries to hunt in the dark? Maybe that's one of the reasons why we have MF focus instead in movie mode cuz the AF system in the D90 is ultimately tied to the AF lamp?

i don think its the problem of AF lamp which can be switched off, it probably more becos the camera will try to focus nearer and further just to hunt for the correct focus point which or turn from infinity to min. focusing distance and back to infinity again.

You can always disable that. I have mine disabled since D70s days.

Anyway, I believe the lack of AF is due to the limited processing bandwidth of the video processing. That might change in the future.
