lol, we maybe hearing names like Al*n Pho*o or Cat*ay Ph*to

IMHO, Cathay Photo is relatvely professional about their sales, unlike the fast-rising generation of ah-beng-ish camera shops.

yes i know i kinda new to these stuff...i sold off my 18-200 in favour of 18-70 for my d70...its a better lens in term of build and optical quality...

I prefer a shorter zoom lens then a 11.1x zoom...

Built, probably, optical quality, I would say at best it's about the same. 18-70 is sharper at the centre but the spherical aberration is not as well corrected at most focal lengths, so at the corners, the 18-200 is superior. Depends on what you want. But for the money, the 18-70 is really value.

Agree with your last sentence. But my experience differs as regards image quality -- i wld rate the 18-70 as superior to the 18-200, especially at the edges/corners. Just my 2 cents.

Strange.. My tests and some other reviews showed otherwise.. :dunno: Either the 18-70 I got is a lemon or the 18-200 I got is a better one.

Let me find the links.

Still couldn't find my posting on the comparison here in CS. I think I posted too much.. ;p
Maybe I'll try to do another more thorough test when I have the time.

Optical quality wise, i dun think there are any noticable difference (unless u take identical photos and TRY compare them side by side)... its not like u r comparing kit lens with Lica lens.. :bsmilie:

I've just seen some photos shot with 18~200VR from another thread.. seems to exhibit the exact same problems I have in my 18~135 kit lens.

But if you look at flexibility, 18~200VR surely superior to 18~135mm, and 18~135mm is better then 18~70mm.

My 0.2 cents worth.. :)

depends on what we are really talking about here..

built wise the 18-70 is definitely better, with the distance scale window, making it similar to the 18-200vr and slightly similar to the higher class trinity lens.

however the 18-135 gives an extra 70-135mm range, which is 105 to 203mm 35mm equivalent. which to many people is much more desirable than just a lens of better built.

As such it is very hard to simply generalise WHICH IS A BETTER LENS.

Even the 18-55 kit lens, many fail to realise that with the ED, 18mm WA, almost none distortion and 52mm filter thread, it is actually a gem, and a steal at 100+

The 18-135 sells more because it is much newer, in fact one was introduced with D70, the other with D80, of which there is still the D70S in between. You are looking at a whole generation apart. However the price of 18-135 will come down to the level in time to come.. some 2nd hand sets are already going for about 300.

impossible.. the 18-200 is superior in sharpness and contrast to the 18-70 anytime.

I have used many copies in my course of work, unless you talk about exceptional cases of lemons.

However the 18-200 suffers from distortion at 18mm, due to it being such a wide focal length range.

Here's an image shot at 18mm/3.5 using D200. Actually I have files for the rest of the focal lengths just don't have time to crop out the centre and sides/corner for comparison.
