the low temp is fine. my d200 survived -14 without counting windchill. even put it on the snow while making a snowman.
keep at least one battery in a pocket close to your body to keep it warm then if the one in the cam fails cos too cold, just swap them round.
the problem come when you walk into a warm env, like into a building. then leave the lens cap on, try not to change lenses/zoom/focus for awhile so you dont get condensation inside the lens. condensation can leave marks, like very faint fog on the lens elements and reduce contrast/invoke flare.
