New VR version coming out? When? I haven't heard of any rumours

I haven't used any zoom lenses since I got my D700, probably because I'm prime lens addict. I used AF-S 35/1.4 most of the time for traveling. But since you already have 50 and looking for zoom I would recommend 16-35 VR

Just a note on the tokina 28-70. Its not strictly speaking, a zoom lens. more like a varifocal. so you ll need to refocus each time you change the zoom setting to get the sharpest images. this is especially so between 28-35mm. i think this is what give the lens a bad name. i recently picked up the 28-70 2.6-2.8 II version with the lens hood bayonet. its surprisingly sharp and contrasty on the wide end, looses abit of contrast on the long end but performs beautifully for a zoom lens. I quite like the colours. its punchy but not overly so, and has a very film-like feel when set wide open.

f5.6 it works v well as an event lens as long as you remember to refocus when you change the FL

hmmm...

i would think that most people will re-focus whenever the scene change, subject moved, or when they zoom in/out.

any reason/s why someone will not re-focus when the scene changed, the subject moved or when they zoomed in/out?

if im taking a group of people i might adjust the focal length slightly after focusing and metering.. not a large difference, maybe +/- 5mm. i ve had no issues with this technique on other lenses, but its very very noticeable with the T 28-70 between 28mm and 35mm (i can see it in the focus screen). or maybe its just my shooting style.

each and every lens has its quirks and one needs to understand and work around them to get the best out of the said lens. i'm just sharing my experience so others will be able to make a better judgement if they re considering a lens in this segment.
