D700 vs M8 and Lens

i have both a nikon digital SLR and a M8, and i brought them both for holiday trips.. so they kind of compensate for each other's weakness.

what i can say is .. indeed i NEEDED the SLR to document some shots (macro, long telephoto shots etc) , but it is the M8 that i use for the special 'moments'.. remember, even though the iso in M8 is not so great, you can always compensate a bit with fast lens.. (and so many lovely ones to choose from for the m8..)

to me, my slr is like my 'domestic helper' ; the m8 is my lover .. surely i can't live without the latter ;)

Oh well. I know that I will definitely buy the DSLR for sure, i guess I should have rephrase it as is it worthwhile to buy it even though it has its flaws.

Hi need the opinion of the brothers, I have just been offered a brand new Leica M8 plus 35mm F2.5 brand new for $5700 with international warranty from a reputable dealer in UK. I am in a tossed up between buying a D700 and 24-70 F2.8 or the M8. I love to do photo journalistic and "moments" shot and I enjoy the images and pictures from my Ricoh that I hardly used my DSLR anymore for the past 3 months.

What do you think? Is it a steal? Is it worth it?

Joe

It's NOT fun carrying a near 2kg+bulky camera while travelling (& rolls of films in those days). Used to do it in my younger days & most of the times you'd want to travel light & comfortable. Then, I bought those idiot cameras but they can't deliver, especially night scenes (Though there are very good ones these days). A good tele & wide is important to me.

Recently, I rented a D700+24-70 for 2 days @ about S$150 & you can do the same to feel it.

I can't afford to have another Leica+lenses so I can't comment on this but the size is quite ideal.

There are alternatives to Leica, like the Bessa and Zeiss cameras, or the Canon or Nikon or even the Contax.....

Kicking myself now for selling my G1+3 lenses cheap :bheart:

Anyway, I bought the D700 & trying to understand the thick manual. :dunno: Needs to fine tune it to my liking. Photography was so much simpler.

Totally agree with Xtol. You must know where you "stand" in photography. If you want just the images then get dslr. But if you want the satisfaction the Leica is the way to go. To me dslr is like drinking gatorade, but Leica is like sipping a cup of italian espresso.
I am a convert, and I am so not going back to dslr. With dslr, the personal satisfaction is not there. But then again, maybe it is because it is a Leica. It's a Leica, man....

the review on dpreview says the m8 is a big slow , menu and reviewing images, at the price one is paying, these should hardly be the case , it should be snappy. This is one reason i was not impressed with an m8, for that dough , it should be as good a compact you can get , just have good optics and the leica is not enough.

Actually M8 taught me a lot about photography - particularly focusing and taking control of the camera - because M8 is lousy at WB control. It's slow and for rapid phototaking it's a dog. But I love my M8 because it has all those wonderful Voigtlander, Canon, Leica lenses... The Bokeh with these lenses are just insane!!!!

I also have a D700. Using the M8 actually made me use the D700 in a different way - I treat it like a super-duper manual camera. Stick a good prime like the Voigtlander 58mm F1.4 or a Nikkor 35mm F2 and it's becomes a Rangefinder with a Summilux or Summicron....

But there's no running away from the fact that D700 (or any DSLR) is far superior for capturing kids that won't stay still... like mine! LOL

In the end, it's horses for courses...

Just my 2 cents...

Rf not mend for sharpshooter, need patience to focus. If you want fast focus, lots of various pics(from wide to tele ) with minimal lens change, then DSLR is the answer.
