D700: $4000 budget

Full frame is the future. D700 is as good as D3 ($6k). Hence I sold my D200 while it is still worth something and all my DX lens and bought my D700 at Lords last week for $3920 including GST. Bought the 24-70 mm lens for $2250 at Lords too. Has to top up more than $3K, No regrets. Pictures are great even up to iso 6400. With D200 I could get good pictures up to iso 800 only. D700 iso is incredible and unbeatable. Canon 5D is no match.Go for it.

It would be pointless to have a good body and not so great lenses!
a d300 with a great lens seems like the better option, but then why get the d300 over ur working d70.
if u dont need live view, noise at high ISO hasn't been a problem for you, you dont need more FPS there really isnt much reason to trade a perfectly fine d70 for a d300 no matter how "oooooh, aaaaah" it is.
you cld start getting better, high end lenses in the mean time with ur existing d70. then when the price lowers for the d700, u can always get it and maximise ur wide angles.

and just another thought, when thinking of buying lenses and cams, dont think so much abt it's depreciation. Photography for me, is a joy, my hobby not a business... rather spend the time shooting then thinking so much abt how worth it, it is...

Yup.. You got it right there.. That's why Nikon was slow in adopting FF.

Were the test shots for FX carried out with the auto-vignetting turned on in your D3? I suppose the D700 FX should behave similar to D3 in terms of picture quality since they share the same sensor right?

Am I right to say that the vignetting problem could be more pronounced if I use a wide angle zoom lens such as 18-35mm F3.5-.45 that I have? I also noticed that prime lenses seem to fare better with FX rather than zoom lenses.

* My wife asked for an upmarket rolex some years back. I bought her an omega. Yeah! Yeah! It's a good omega. But it's not a rolex. A few years later... surely I don't have to complete my line, eh?

I feel happy my wife did not ask for a rolex or omega, not even a casio.:bsmilie:

I think you better keep your finger cross. She might after you get your cam.

My did, but just a digital piano.

:D

Hmm... I left it on the default setting.

By right, D700 should behave similarly, however, we'll never know if the same processing engine was used.

Yes, usually wide angle lenses would have more pronounced vignetting. But it's not just vignetting alone, it's some optical aberration stemming from the fact that the rays did not go through the AA filter perpendicularly at the corners.

You are lucky.... even they ask for rolex (buy her the 6 match stick one lor)... ;).... if I go get a D700, mine will want my life....

I was dead serious about getting the D700 but as some one mentioned "if you have to consider the price then don't buy"!

I went out and bought the D300 + MD10 and am extremely happy with it

Get the D300 + Sigma 30 1.4 or 35 f2 and you will love it

point is... buy what you want and enjoy them now if u have the budget and don't have to live life in misery

no point body first, lens first, etc

body good, lens no good... also hopeless

lens first, body later also no good... like say buy all the top lenses now and by the time 3 yrs down the road new body (say a new hi-tech one) come out and your lens again not up to that new body

haiz... never end...

buy now, use now, enjoy now

you know your own needs and financial bounds, most importantly, don't stretch beyond your means. spend your hard earned and saved money wisely, strike a compromise within those limiting factors.

unless $$ is not a problem at all, then, the only limiting factor would be how fast the technology can keep up with your $$$, or your appetite...

bottom line, live and spend within your means...

sis, this make lots of sense. Like 70-200 AFS VR lens which vignette a bit on FX

After reading your replies and some research, I feel I may give D700 a miss this time round as the premium for it is too high. Perhaps I may go for a FX a few years down the road when the market is saturated with FX cameras and production cost of FF sensors drop considerably. In addition, getting a FX now seems to be an overkill for me given my usage pattern and needs.

I may go for the D300 with MB-10, 20mm F2.8 and 35mm F2 with the 4k budget. After so many years of using zoom lenses, I realized I have this bad habit of using only the extreme ends of focal length of a zoom lens. Prime lens seem to make me think and plan for the effect, composition and bokeh first. In addition, I feel that they are affordable, light, fast and sharp. Not sure any bro and sis has any comments or advise.

it seems that you have really given some thoughts into it. have fun with the D300, you won't regret it :P

My approach precisely.

Although I am not sure of your choice of lenses (for long term FX use) but the move is reasonable. Fixed lens requires you too think, and yes they are light, fast and sharp. My favourite lenses 20, 35, 50 and 85. Have them all.

Sounds good, I think more than 90% of photographers, including many pros, were shooting on cropped sensors for several years and they can produce professional results.

Prime lenses will help to stretch your creativity. If bokeh, go for 1.2 or 1.4. ;)

If you're going with the D300 and have time to wait, why not see how the D90 performs. The sensor is apparently the same, but now has movie function.

You know 许冠杰 got a song?

D钱是会继续来!!!

So, hoot ah!!!! Why wait? HAAHAHA!

You mean how fast your $$$ can keep up with the technology, or appetite.

wat I meant was... you have more $$ than what the current technology (on the market) can offer, aka $$ is no issue, so...technology can't keep up with your appetite, and your fat pocket/bank, aka $$$ ....

apologies TS for the slight OT....:)
