On F4, you can use in either P or S mode for G lenses

Why don't u just use the 17-40L as a comparison instead.
The range is too different: 12-24 vs 17-40.

TO do this comparison.. perhaps the 17-55DX and the 17-40L would make a better comparison?

Yes, but it doesn't mean full compatibility. P and S modes can be a pain when you want DOF control.

The range is too different: 12-24 vs 17-40.
Which makes your previous post comparing the 12-24 with the canon 20mm and 24mm primes moot and its precisely what I'm trying to point out.

Take the 12-24DX. Canon has nothing on the drawing board for this. The lens can be used on any full frame camera (from F4 onwards that support G lenses) from 18-24, with the quality rivalling primes. List price: S$1999. For Canon, a 20mm + 24 mm prime cost $1000 + $2800 although, I have to admit, they have f/2.8 and f/1.4 respectively. But when using the lens on landscape, the extra f-stop is not utilized...

If you intended to compare, then compare 2 lenses closest in both utility and price. That would be the 12-24 vs the 17-40, or if you wanted to ignore the price, the 16-35.

Comparing the 12-24 with 2 canon highspeed primes doesn't seem logical at all, unless its intended to put a slant on the argument.
