D600 User Thread

Coming from D700 to D600. Both in M mode with auto ISO on and external flash SB900 on for both camera, I notice that in D700 if i set to ISO800 it will stay as ISO800 even background is dark but for D600 it will jump to ISO2000 or more if background is too dark.
Mind sharing your experience.

Pls used bigger apearture to reduce the dark background and not need set too high ISO to be lower on 200 - 800 and see how

Personally I will not set to ISO-Auto if I have a flash mounted. Since using a flash, it will be better for you to control these settings yourself.

That said, have u tried the FV and AE lock and see if the same thing happen?

Im usind M mode f5.6 1/60 SB900 and ISO depend on backgroung brightness but set to auto for group photo, just that for D700 the ISO remain unchange even at auto ISO but D600 will pump up alot to have a bright background. Am I missing out something or both camera behave differently?

Seems so that both behaves differently. My D7000 is behaving the same as your D600. Seems like its the way they are being programmed. And I was thinking something wrong with my D700. What you can do is to limit the auto ISO to a lower limit say 800-1600 if you do not want to go higher.

I never use the Auto-ISO function before, but from what I see, you can set the max ISO to a certain value. Could it be your D700 max auto ISO was set to 800, while the D600 at higher value, say 3200?

Did you see any difference in the same image?

I usually set auto ISO for D700 max 3200 and D600 max 6400.
I had sold my D700, as for different the back ground is very well balance of cos with higher ISO and believe the flash battery can last longer or flash over heat reduce.

I actually set Auto-ISO for my D800E to 3200 max only ;p

Yesterday, I just bought my D600 and 24-85mm from SLR-R. Still trying out the camera and the len. I also try the 85mm f1.8 at the shop and I was blown out by the bokar of the lense. It is amazing good for a low price. Still considering it.

Currently, I have 50mm f1.4D, 24-85mm, 70-300mm. Wonder if I should get the 85mm f1.8 lense. Any comments?

Hi Ray welcome to the club.

I guess regarding lens selection, you really got to look at your style of shooting. I like to share mine. I shoot mainly people, such as my kids, street people and also help out in some events occasionally. For me, the 50mm prime lens is indispensable, especially for portraits. I prefer getting closer to my subject. The 85mm Will be nice but most of the time, I don't have the luxury of having posed shots, especially for events and kids portraitures, so it does gets tight. I will choose the 85mm if say I do strobes with models who can sit still for me or if serious portraiture is your style. It does makes a pretty good street lens, but your 70-300 is probably more than sufficient unless u always find yourself shooting in low light.

If budget is not an issue, it does makes a nice addition to your collection, given that it's street price is not too high.

Actually you already have a pretty decent set of lenses, and like wolfton mentioned, see what your style is.

85 is very nice but unless you have the luxury of posed models, it can get a little too dicey.

If you like streets, perhaps can pair with a 35 1.4G. Pity they don't have a 1.8G cos the 1.4G is quite expensive.

The 85mm 1.8 has the AF version, and the AF-S G version - which did you test?

The bokeh of the AF 85mm f/1.8D is actually not too good - quite a bit of ni-sen bokeh and blade shape shows up from f/2.8 already.

The AF-S 85mm f/1.8G has much better bokeh. Both lenses are very sharp though

D600 I can only set 1-hold on to AE button or 2-lock and press the button again after I shoot which always forget to unlock.
D600 works just like D90 in this area, there are really different from semi pro body for trade off in weight and build. Overall im still happy with D600 compare to D700

Thought it was straight forward...

Turn the switch to the right where the marker meets the lightbulb sign. Its not supposed to stay in that position though. When you release the grip, the switch will spring back to "on" position.

Yes that is one of the cons I had when thinking of purchasing the d600. All other fx bodies have that AE-L function and a exclusive AF-L button also. If Nikon had put those functions on the d600....actually no difference to nikon, I still end up purchasing ;p

I think I will try the 50mm f1.4D lense first. I might add 24mm f2.8 or 20mm f2.8 for collection of wide angle for landscape purpose.
