I think i will sell my D800 to get D600 :p

Please arh... knock off the sarcastic remarks! :bsmilie: There will be uses for near-MF DSLRs and uses for affordable FF DSLRs. Both are different spectrums of the market. Just as why some folks believe 12MP (from D700) is more than enough for certain professional work - this includes me. You basically get a DSLR most suited to your needs or wants - so each to their own.

Besides, I don't think Nikon intends to make D600 kill the market for the D800 nor the D700 etc. Only those who think so doesn't know any better.

Depending on the final specs of the D600 (size of VF, FPS after adding grip, etc, etc) D700 may just live on as a die-hard linebacker (as an affordable high-speed alternative to the D3/D3s/D4).

I'm curious about the D600 is because of the final unconfirmed specs of this DSLR (whether it will completely replace D700) which will be revealed at Photokina. I've a feeling it's a big "no", if they intend to replace D700, the nomenclature should be like "D710", not a smaller number like "600"... Otherwise, it's like releasing D2000 to replace D3200 - does that even make sense? Anyway, I'm looking for a sorta "backup" cam, whether D600 is it or not - won't know until it's fully revealed. True replacement for D700 might still come in the form of D710 or D700s, that's up to Nikon to decide - (see how SB910 replaces SB900)

Lets wait and see...

It's not gonna be a direct replacement for the D700 because the segments have been redefined.

When the D700 came out, it was a 95% D3. This directly affected D3 sales, which is why there was no D700s. On the other hand, Nikon realized that the high megapixel market is somewhat of an untapped potential for them and they were being held back because of the D3x's price. This is why the D800 costs half of tat of the D3x and isn't a full pro body. While landscapers, portraiture artists and architecture guys need some weather protection, they don't often work in conditions that press photographers etc. work, for whom the D4 is designed. The D800's weather protection is more than enough for these uses.

To launch a direct replacement for the D700 would mean that it'd be a 95% D4 and Nikon won't make that mistake again. The only niche that is left to be explored is an affordable full frame. This is a segment where people only want the basics, i.e. A full frame sensor, some decent burst speed, decent AF. They are willing to forgo additional niceties such as say, full CLS, heavy duty weather sealing, HDMI uncompressed out etc. for the sake of affordability. The only way to do this is to dumb down the FX camera to slightly above D7000 specs. This is exactly what the D600 will be and a lot of people would buy it nonetheless. For these people, the D700 would have been a lot more camera than they would ever need. An FX D7000 is what they were looking for and they would get it.

For that reason, the eventual D300s replacement (D400?) would be a much different camera to the D600. It's have top of the line build, AF and features for a DX camera and I won't be surprised if it'd end up being more expensive than the D600.

I for one, can see good reason for Nikon's new market segmentation rationale. It's much better defined than it was in the D700 days.

D700? Don't think it can be replacement by D710 or D700s cause no point to thump up the older design and added higher MP or video function.
The weight still there and can't be reduce the weight anymore.

D800 for current new entry may consider too expansive body.
But lots of ppls jump to D800 already.

So how bout DX user? Nikon's still care their DX user.
From now on who will be jump into FX?
The only D600 entry level in the budget cost or not sure yet.

See to believe :D

The D800 is the D700 replacement, of course there won't be D710/D700s

Actually both D800 and D600 are not D700 replacement what. D800 positioned higher, D600 lower... But I think D600 just take TIME! I dont think many ppl can wait, considering the Thailand flood experience and the long wait of D800.

Frankly speaking, if u will to invest in a full frame camera, no body will care about petty things like is the D800 a successor of the d700? Important thing is that it must fulfill the needs of the photographer in terms of noise level performance etc... some people still buy the d700 as they do not see the need to have a 36mp camera...

End of the day it's just another gear, few years later there will be a d900, d1000 etc...

so gentlemen, if the rumored d600 is not a replacement of D700 then it will still be manufactured and distributed right?

as a non professional, I wanted to upgrade from D7k to D700, the question is - will they reduce the price of D700 if the D600 comes out?

the reason why I choose d700 over these two:

D600 - Rumor - it will take another 2 years to make it proven reliable
D800 - Pro - I couldn't afford

I don't think so. The D700 isn't part of Nikon's system chart anymore, I couldn't find it in Japan anymore last week.

That is because the Nikon D700 has been officially discontinued.
