Reposing this from another thread. I sent mine in for cleaning and this is what I gathered from them:
Rough cleaning - 10 min waiting time (max 1 day) - just a sensor cleaning
Thorough cleaning - 2-3 days waiting time - sensor + surrounding area (mirrorbox most probably) cleaning <- apparently this is what Tokyo HQ told them to do for D600 bodies. I'm speculating so as to minimise the number of unhappy D600 owners spreading negative views about dusty D600s in the forums.

So, to summarize, this oil spatter problem is not just isolated to the D600, but also to the D800 and the D7000? Wow, what is Nikon doing?

On the 3th day of xmas my tru luv has shown to me.

3 sensor dust
2 sensor swab
And a squeezy rocket blowee!

Maybe all their DSLR share the same design fault...

My D7000 had the oil spot problem, when I brought to them for sensor cleaning. But as I couldn't leave my camera at NSC due to a HK trip, I decided to come back another day to send the camera in for servicing. NSC cleaned my sensor and I left the place. The following weeks when I was back from HK, I sent it in again and they said it was only sensor dust no problem with the mechanics.. So I really am stumped on this one -.-

Just got bk my cam for dust sensor cleaning. Report indicated sensor cleaned. No other action done. So? My cam still under warranty, and I will send to them for sensor housekeeping when i found dust again. Same time can poison trying other lens at the customer corner...

Can I know how do I check the oil spots if I am getting one in the shop.
Should I keep clicking until 3000 shots plus in front of a white paper?

I dont think the shop will let you fire 3k shoots just so that you can check.

But for mine i notice some dust spots at upper left of image and i flip up the mirror and give it a few gentle blows using a blower and most of the dust is already gone.

It will come back if ur shutter count is less than 3k.

I am one of those who left my D600 with Nikon for 3 days for their thorough sensor cleaning. Everything looks clean and nice after I got hold of my body. But the spots came back after another 200 shots or so. I contacted NSC again and they said to bring it back for another round of cleaning. I told them to find a solution to this as it is just not right to make us keep going back to them for the same issue. Was promised they will escalate the matter to the management.

Just send in NSC and they will clean free for you. Next time maybe Tokyo need to change new body to overcome the problem, you will be one of the first .. Cheers keep shooting ..

Keep shooting and enjoy FREE sensor cleaning service .. Cheers

Just want to share my case. During making of a time lapse, I was surprised to find out dust (or oil, I don't know) getting collected during the session. I obviously didn't unmount the lens during the whole session. Is this common?

The youtube link is here. You can see new dust spots start to appear on the right side. Note, the little black dots that only appear in a single frame are birds, not dust spot.

I bought a D600 on Dec. 25th. I checked the sensor (shot white wall, boosted contrast in Photoshop) and saw no sights of dust after 600 frames on my new camera.

The D7000 had a dust issue when it was first released that Nikon fixed. Either I am lucky or perhaps they have fixed the D600 issue.

Have any new (in the last month) D600 buyers had any dust issues? The poll here seems to show that about half don't have a problem...

Maybe most Bro dont care.... since buy already, dust or no dust, just shoot lor... if mind, prob they wont buy....

I think is 3000plus and not 600plus shots. check Utube for Video.

Yeah, I know that they say after 3000 frames the problem goes away, I'm saying I've shot 600 frames and the sensor is completely free of dust and debris on my camera.
