If budget is not a problem, sure you can use. You gain some but lose some. It's nothing to do with f/1.8. It's the focal length.

I hear-heard,
Some say, A 50mm focal length is still a 50mm be it on fx or dx. Just that the depth of view or isit angle or view or.. ..

Let me do a search....

Hi guys,
wanna ask, since D5100 is a DX-format cam (err, right?) , can they mount/use FX-format lens too?
cos i was looking to buy AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G, which on the nikon site says tt its compatible with Nikon FX-format digital-SLR cameras... so means our DX format cam unable to fully utilise the f/1.8? or is it just cropped only?

Need your advice, thanks :)

For Nikon lens, if the lens is stated as like AFS 17-35 F2.8, it means it can be used on DX or FX, unless the lens itself stated like AFS 18-55 F3.5-4.5 DX, the word DX means it is meant for DX bodies, of course you can still mount in on Full frame camera but your Full frame camera will itself set to 1.5x crop factor which is DX, for this you would loose some megapixels ah.

If you use a FF lens on a DX bodies, it would be as per normal as what you use a DX lens on a DX bodies, you would not loose any advantages or get any disadvantages. However, if you use a DX lens on a FF body, you will loose out in terms of megapixel due to crop factor limitation on the lens.

No one mention about the AF to TS.
You can use that lens but only manual focus. Coz D5100 has no built-in motor.

'Af-s' already suggest it can be use on non-bim bodies????

Unless afd, can mount but manual focus

woah thats way more information than i expected. Thanks a million guys! damn useful for me!
Knew that this was the place to pose my newbie questions :)

Don't confuse the TS, this lens can autofocus on the D5100. Its the new AF-S 50mm f1.8G. Note the AF-S part

yes .. As long got AF-S ... the lens got built in motor... just dont get the Ai or D lens will do.

If you going for D90, why not head for D7000 which is a lot better.
