Folks, gotta experiment leh.
I'm new too, take it out, bring the kids out, wife out dogs out head for a park, get many many shots with different settings n see what is the outcome.
You may be amazed.
Use A, S, Auto WB, Exposure Compensation, Manual, Scene, Effect modes all, hands on is the best way to learn in my op

Btw, I'm from a p&s lumix user just 3 wks back.
I even use my kit lens 18-55mm with my D5100 n attempted macro... Hehe.
I even put it on Flickr for my virgin Macro...
D5100 makes me so happy!

My D50 is still going strong through the rough and tumble, dust, moisture, heat & cold of Asian Tsunami, Tamil Tigers, Africa, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, India, USA...hope the D5100 is as hardy! Looking forward to 3 upcoming trips for the year in the Philippines, New Zealand and India. Then off to Bangladesh in January.

hmmm... why not choose SB-700 instead? So you would not worry about compatibility issue.

casue di866 is cheaper with more fuction then sb-700. I originally wanted to ask if the high sync fuction don't work with d5100. Well i got that answered. Just not too sure what wireless flash trigger to get. Can't seems to find a good answer on the net.
