D5100 user...fall in!! Part Two

Hi Bro, u meant ur birding shots at telephoto zooming is it? how is it used? i mean isn't the natural light source enough and won't it scare the bird away when they see flashes? thxs to explain.

I used rear curtain flash syn for all my birding shots. It is good as it actually properly expose your background and your subject nicely.

Avian photography with flash is not something so simple like flashing people. The amount of flash that we used is very minimum and the flash is just a fill flash. It is just enough to brighten up the shadowed area around the bird and when we do that, we do not machine gunned the bird with flash, it is like 5-10 sec per shot interval type. If you flash it correctly, the bird would not be frighten. Your subject and environment will be very well exposed. Control of flash is not easy.

My flash setting is set under using GN mode in SB800, this was taught to me by a senior avian photographer.

There has been debates on whether flash is good or not for nature photography. There is no wrong or right answer. Some times flash is necessary and some times no necessary and there might be time where flash is prohibited.

Rave reviews for Nissin Di622 mark ii on build quality and the range is also much better than sb700. Take a look at that. Although for me, i think that build in flash is enough for me probably too lazy to also charge batteries for flash. Hehe. Price is also much cheaper at around 200+.

I was thinking like you when i bought my first flash... That time 3rd party flash was not readily available. I got a SB600 first and 3 weeks later I sold it and got a SB800. I lost $100 when I sold off my SB600 that time. If i got the SB800 first, i would have save the $100 for more Carl's junior burgers....

The SB800 has been working very well for me for the past 3 years....

bro, in ur short words, there are enough information for me to google into that subject further. once again, u did it. u really carried the saying of "teaching how to fish is better than fish for the person". at least ur information provides me enough substance to look into it further....kudos to u man....:D

n pls don't stop what u r doing. all of us noobs is learning a lot this way n i think faster as well...:D

now, the only thing i don't know if my third party flash could do that....

As far as I remember, Nikon flash have illumination pattern that you can choose, which can aid if your subject is far. The manual zoom head can help, but by default, 3rd party like Nissan would have its auto zoom head set to the max zoom.

The last thing left to discuss is iTTL which I will not recommend for birding.

iTTL can be used for birding... but you must know how to control it well. I have seen some avian photographers using TTL for birding and they use it well.

One thing good for using Nikon flashes for birding, can you believe it, let say 5 person using the GN mode in Nikon flash and they trigger their flashes together. You will be surprise, the photo for that shot with 5 flashes triggered at the same time are correctly exposed, not over-exposed. Think that only Nikon speedlite can do it.

i think it's best to understand the capabilities and behaviour of the equipment to have a better control of it be it 3rd party, 2nd party or 1st party right? haha..sounds like insurance alrdy....

must start saving up alrdy.....

Confirm liao... your set nothing wrong... Mine set does flash twice when using built-in flash. But when i try with external flash, it flash only one time... so no worries... your set is find.... :D

Thanks bro, tonight I will try with external flash to check. But anyone know why the flash light flashing 2 times using built in flash? Sound like something not correct lei.. Rear curtain sync should only flash 1 time only lei..

You can rent OEM flash to try, 3rd party ones a bit less likely. Pretty sure you won't know what you miss or overspent until you bought and try one if you have no knowledge at all.

yup, agree on that. prob will try to borrow from some of my frens n see how each ones work.... :)
