D5100 user...fall in!! Part Two

I got a 50mm f/1.8D lens for my B'day Gift from one of my Gd Friends. However My friend didn't know I'm using D5100. And end up I'm practicing Manual Focusing all the time when using this lens. Apart from Manual Focusing (which to some ppl is a pain in the butt), everything else is good. I kinda like it. But most of my friends told me to sell it and get the G-type lens. Also, my friends are telling me 50mm is too tight, go for 35mm. Any advise?

If you would like to have the auto focus capability, your only choice is to get the G lens.

Some like 50mm, others 35mm. It is really a preference that you must decide.

ask the seniors, i'm having the 35mm n really love the lens n IQ. i am thinking of getting the 50mm next, be it 1.8G or the D lens. also thinking that instead, maybe getting the 85mm micro could be a better choice getting the best of both worlds, micro n 85mm focal length. do u think it's a good relevance to justify that way? thxs for any advice....

Auto-focus is of course a great boost to me especially when I want to shoot streets. Not really feeling to get another new DX lens (35mm 1.8) since I'm planning to switch FX in maybe 2 yrs time? Which is why I somehow have the thought of keeping my 50mm 1.8 instead of selling it :(

If you don't mind the f/3.5 aperture.

The curious thing is that the 35mm can work decently well as a full frame lens despite the DX designation. Some corner light fallout, but remarkable nonetheless.

Well, the 50mm is pretty liquid, so I don't see a problem with selling it. It is up to you.

yeah, that's a good planning....even me also, nxt lenses are all FX lenses but i think i've covered the zoom parts, so planning the prime lens to come from FX but the 85mm is DX n the FX one price is undreamable...

yeah, noticed that as well but then again bro, in ur experience, 85mm micro can serve well as portrait lens? otherwise, its just a trade off with the aperture. but then again, i foresee after getting the 85mm micro, a 50mm 1.8G or D will come.....hahaha....it's this virus la.....very scary one....cant say when can stop one...

I'm quite interested too about the 85mm f3.5 micro(though I already have the tamron 90mm).

read quite a lot of review online already, some say IQ is not really good at widest aperture, IQ will get better around f5.6 onward (IIRC)

pros about the 85mm micro is the VR and it's internal focusing. (not like tamron) haha

so I'm thinking of getting it too..

True. 50mm 1.8 seems like a "toy" to everyone because it is very cheap and everyone can afford. But I do not see a point of selling it and then buying it back after some time. Kinda wierd to me. Hahas. Anyway the new 28mm 1.8 lens is very attractive. it's the price that scares me away :(

Sorry man. I can't help you with that as I haven't used that lens.

As for my personal 85mm f/1.4, I do shoot wide open with it.

(sorry. Duplicate post)

yeah, was trying to plan my primes like this, 35mm then skip 50mm cos i think i can do the zooming with my legs, then am interested in macro as well n thinking of trying with the AF extension tube but that alrdy costs $90. the bros here also recommended that for macro, best is with a true macro lens. the reviews was here n there la, some say extension tube suffice, some swear by the macro lens. so i looked at the 85mm macro nikkor. if that can serve as a portrait lens, then should be ok as the next step after skipping 50mm, 85mm should be nice......u tell me bro how is ur opinion. maybe could help decide as well.....thxs to share...

Yes, the Tamron is a macro lens capable of 1:1 reproduction ratio.
