got my D5000 last Saturday, tried out the D90, the build is defintely better with more dedicated buttons, but just felt too big for my hand.

Really thank you guys for the comments.... it really help me a lot... and i know which one to get.... thank a lot.... espcially thank: Fotophilic, kevkie and weychuan.....

Hi kokb3ng, glad that my post can be of help to u, welcome to the club :)

After owning the D90 for 3 weeks, and many many shots later, I can share a bit more experience...

I didn't took much notice of the B/W mini-LCD screen at first, but after much use, I find it extremely usefull to have a quick glance of the existing settings, this came as a bit of suprise to me

The battery life is amazing!

3" VGA resolution LCD helps a great deal when I zoom in to check if my picture is ok or suffers from handshake/focus problem :embrass:

I also bought a SB-900 Nikon speedlight and the "Auto FP High-Speed Sync" works like magic, but I'm not sure if this works on the D5000?? Anyone?

I considered between the 18-55, 18-105, 18-200 and 16-85 to be my first DSLR walk-around lens, it took me many brain cracking hours going through much forums and reviews, and I choose 18-105. Still feel that it's a right decision for me and I'll be getting the 70-300 soon  There is no doubt the 16-85 is the best among all but comes with a heavy price, 18-200 has very seductive range but will clash with my future 70-300 too much, 18-55 is very worth but because of its short range, I'll be happier with a 35mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8 instead, so ended up getting the default 18-105 :D

There are many good lens from other manufacturers, but I feel for a new user like myself, I'll probably not get them as my 1st lens

I have to so totally agree with this. Initially i had decided on the D90 over the Canon 500D with this as an important factor, not due to personal experience but rather reading up on the net and mostly taking references from advise given by CSers.

After shooting with it for 2 wks + , i find it is so hard to live without. Everything can be access from there and in double quick time, even more so once you get use to it. Compared to a friend who bought a model without the mini-LCD, i can get shots off faster and my battery life is longer.

D90 offers a lot of room for growth and exploration just based on the body and kit lens itself. If you can afford it, get the 50mm F1.8 too. I find that switching over the two lens also helps me understand the concepts better by directly comparing the results. :bsmilie:

Hi All,

M a newbie here and also looking a buying my first DSLR. Would you kindly please recommend a good shop where I can purchase the D90? The lens kit I assume is the one that comes with the basic lens?

Cheers

You can try at john3:16, CP, MS color & alan photo etc.

Some of them can provide you quotation too, call/email them and ask for quote.

yep... D3000 should be out in a few months as a replacement for d60... more or less confirmed that d3000 stripped off the swivel LCD and Video function of D5000... the rest of the specs unknown yet... this should be a very good newbie camera like d60...

heard replacement for d300 is due as well... just to add in a bit of poison... ;)

Any replacement for the D90 yet???

Any replacement for the D90 yet???

come on... give Nikon a break... the just launched that camera August last year... you want them to cut short their R&D time and give us shitty products?

Well in all fairness, shortening of product cycle seems to be a trend that will invade the DSLR arena also. As DSLR become more mass market, more micro category and differentiation will be introduced as vendors attempt to cater to growing number of users.

Have been in the CE industry for a while and have seen it happen to TVs, laptops, cameras, etc etc .... its an eventuality i think but hope its not done so at the expense of quality products.

just my 2 cts worth.

Kilkenny,

You are right. It is no longer a wonder, if we see new replacement from nikon for D90.:cool::cool:

I don't really expect to see a D90 replacement to come so soon, since the d5000 was just released recently. A new D91 or something would in turn canibalise the d5000 sales either directly, or from the avaliability of 2nd hand D90s in the market.
