I m just getting into the interest of photography. But i m not very sure of hw to handle the DSLR, and hw to prevent dust from getting into it. In simple words, i m a newbie to cameras,
But i thoguht of picking it up as a interest. I m nt very sure wthher to get 40 or 80. If i get one of them, what are the things that i must look out for. When i m buying that time, can i ask the salesman to teach me hw to operate.
Is it a must to get a dry box, tripod and those lense. I know photography is expensive, i thought of saving money to buy a 80.
WOnder shall i give up photography cos there are too many things to look out for.
Hmmm..... good idea. never thought of it though..... Actually that's my full time job.

I somehow... still think a newbie, if to chose between a D40 and a D40x, should go for the D40.
But I think I said enough in this forum about this issue. It could be that I have a bias towards the D40,but I don't see any flaw in my reasoning. But since so many people keep on saying D40x, can someone tell me where I have gone wrong?
For a little bit more, 10mp instead of 6mp. You haven't gone wrong anywhere. People go for MP count.
For heaven's sake... $200 more for a teeny extra 4mp?And then, lower flash sync speed, worse noise levels (if my theory is correct)
You can't do much with the extra 4mp, and $200 is more than the cost of the cute little SB 400! Id rather have D40 with SB-400 rather than D40x with in built flash..
unless they got $$$ to spare... but if got so much $$$ then don't buy the D40 or D40x and go to the D200 lah :dunno:
More room for them to crop mah. :bsmilie:
coz u have a cabinet full of lenses mah.. keke LOLCrop..
Actually the SB400 makes a big diff in lighting if you use bounce flash indoors. I think this is more important than cropping. I personally don't relaly like to crop photos-I prefer to change the lens instead.
IMHO, the D40x lies in no mans land between the D80 and D40, and to a lesser extent, the D80 is also in no mans' land between the D40 and D200 because of the dropping price of the D200.
If I were asked which cameras I would buy it would be D200, D40 and then D80. D40x ill never make it to my list.
coz u have a cabinet full of lenses mah.. keke LOL
Anyway, I went for D80 coz i think I D40 is too small for my hands, the D80 do feel more comfortable (and well built). I like the top LCD too! I also got the kit coz as newbie, i think 18~135mm is versatile lens to start wif.
But after several days using the kit lens, I do realise some limitation when shooting at max aperture.![]()
My D40 only works (autofocuses) with 2 lenses of mine>>18-55mm f3.5-5.6 and 55-200mm VR f4-5.6
It's my D2x that does my bashing for me last time... woah.. I sitll remember the stupid lens that weighs a ton... Sadly when I return to SG I sold all my lenses over there (higher re-sell value there)>>Only brought my D2x body back with me.
get the 18-200VR. works like a dream on the D40.![]()

To a lot of people, they take 10/6=166%=>66% more!! They forgot in terms of linear resolution, it's sqrt(10/6)=129%=>only 29% more.
Hmm... Yah. You give me some inspiration. Next time my relatives come and ask me for advice how many megapixels camera they should buy I will use this analogy to explain to them.
Seems much clearer when you see it in concrete numbersMy cousin was shocked to discover that "Your professional camera only 6 megapixels and my compact camera 5 megapixels?!" :bsmilie: :bsmilie:
All I need to do is zoom in 100% and show them how clean my 6mp image is compared to their 8mp images from their compacts. Megapixels is not everything. ;p
