Maybe her went and bought the brand new Olly E510!

Tell me more about this Commander mode. I was actually planning to purchase the SB600.

There exists no commander mode at all>> you cannot use your camera flash as a "commander" to fire your SB600 flash when it is mounted off the camera. (No wireless slave mode)

Sorry for my crappy explanation. I have no idea how to put it English that is understandable.

Ya lor, if budget isn't an issue, get the D80. Else, start with D40X for practice then upgrade later.

Actually, if u never handle any SLR b4, then I would suggest start with D40X as it's a simple machine to start with. D80 comes with many functions that u might need awhile to get familiar if u are new to SLRs.

t why pay $300 more just for the 10mp sensor? if he is new to digital photography he doesn't need that mny megapixels. Even for me 6mp is enough.. (Unless I need to crop, crop, crop and crop)

I just follow his query on D40X or D80 thingy mah. So i suggest that lor. 10mp or not depending on his usage.

If he's using for work and needs to print A3 to A0 size posters, then he'll need that kind of camera.

Really depends on his usage. I've a friend that blows his wedding photos into posters to hang.

Hmm... Okay.. didn't know you were referring to the original TS.

Actually now my position is the opposite of the TS.. :bsmilie: Thinking of getting a new D200. I want to use some of the more complicated stuff now.. And getting lazy to compensate for the D40's overblown highlights (70% of the time). Don't feel like selling my D2x due to sentimental reasons.. but then the D2x is really starting to look like a trophy in the cabinet now.. haven't been used in 3mths.

The darned problem is the D200 battery life is definetly not as long as my D40, and I cannot stand lugging around batteries.

I still love my D40 though. Especially now that she got a new 55-200mm AF-S VR lens as a partner.

Then use the D2X lah!

D2x too heavy.. and it's getting old. I I'm not wrong it still can use i-TTL flash, instead of the older d-TTL. I want to preserve this camera-my livelihood in the US. Sentimental value lah!

Don't feel like buying D200 as it seems to be getting old too, and I'm afraid that after I buy it Nikon will come up with a D300 or something that has some amazing feature.. then I will really feel the hole in wallet :bsmilie:

Anyone heard of rumours? I did hear of a new D3x or something like that, but the price...

Hang in there.. I heard rumours that the new body they are announcing is D400. Then again it's just rumours. BTW, the D200 with a battery grip is almost as heavy as the D2X, and without the battery grip tthe D200 feels quite unbalanced.

lol... my D2x was such a power sucker I did my own little setup (with the help of my engineer friend) and connected a car battery to power it>>didn't use batteries. The Car battery was hung in a big waist pouch at the back of my waist, and connected to the D2x battery slot via electrical wire... I must have looked like an idiot :bsmilie:

That setup was real heavy... Water in the car battery splashing around and the D2x being one gigantic monster in itself.

Well, if I don't remember wrongly, the D2X is able to last longer than the D200 per charge.

D400? Skip of D300?

I was on "full standby" (My own term) in the US>>aka I have to last one day fully charged. I was the... (In my own terms again) Quick response team. First on the scene for newsflash or whatever (Nwspapers are damn competitive over there)

To do last the whole day without a charge I'd prob need 10 batteries, or go back to the newsvan to charge my cam. (I shot from helicopter and was transported by helicopter, not the newsvan-Helicopter had no facilities to charge my D2x).

Darn... I miss those days... In Singapore it's so small, there's no competition among the newpapers.... Some say it's good, but I think I'll feel bored. There's no "tension" to keep my adrenaline running.

Hahaha... So it's less stressful here? ;p Anyway, in that kind of situation, I don't think the D200, even with the MB-D200, can make it. However, ironically, I believe that the D70s, although it won't be fast enough, will probably be able to make it on 3-4 batteries. ;p

lol... my D40 is still the champion in this area.. Never seen a camera with a battery that lasts so long. I have a spare battery for it>>but I only used it ONCE, when I was on holiday in cameron highlands and didn't charge the battery for 2 days. Wasted m money on the spare battery.

About stressful... erm... Then I must like stress then ;p It's so docile in Singapore... in the US damn fun lah... it's not really the helicopter pilot who controls the helicopter... it's more of me... he flies me to location, and I can choose to dismount from the craft and shoot on the ground, or shoot from air... If I shoot from air... damn fun.. like I control the chopper this time. Tell him how to turn, direction, how low to go... ;p I used to sit in the "GPMG seat" and made hang half in-half out of helicopter to shoot....woah... FUN!

The US people always say I crazy because I dismount from helicopter so fast, do hover jump and run to scene-the other news agency photographers usually wait for helicopter to land, run like slowpoke and all... with the few exception of those who have served in military before. (I happened to do my NS in SG so I'm used to heli ops)

Only thing is the helicopter likes to vibrate :what:. Have to shoot in full sunlight.. if it's in evening I really have to dismount. Also, if it's the president, you are not allowed to come within XXX distance on land and air. like got restricted airspace around the president.. so got to dismount, because even with super long telephoto lens (400mm) I can't make a shot. Not that the shutter speed to slow... it's the whole helicopter shake so much I can't even frame the shot in viewfinder.. it's like trying to be a sniper like that.

The saddest thing is now in Singapore I'm back to a largely desk job. Photography is not my occupation anymore. (The stint in the US was a crazy idea on my part, a one-off thing. Singapore's still my home for the next few years as far as I can see). I can't seem to find a job with SPH or Mediacorp... I don't even know how or where to apply.. I don't like taking wedding pictures, to be honest. I don't think I am "creative" enough (Saw some of the wedding shots posted in this forum, I never had that kind of ideas in my life, and I don't want to go round copying peoples work). Anyone has any idea what paper qualifications SPH needs, and whether they need photographers in the first place? I have a gut feeling the supply exceeds the demand. Any help in this area greatly appreciated... Cause I have no idea where to even start lookig for information.

Wow.. your stint in US sounds like real fun to me.. :)

I have a friend who graduated with a Poly Diploma in Electronics and got a job in Zaobao as a photographer. Now he's senior there. I think portfolio more important. But I don't know what's their criteria now because they might now need photographers to be able to report or reporters to be able to shoot also. :dunno:

Maybe try http://www.sph.com.sg/career/recruitment.html or http://careers.mediacorp.com.sg

Wee! Thanks :D

But photographer doing reporting? Aiyoh... My English... mummy ah. :bsmilie:

 I seriously doubt you had an actual car battery strapped to your waist. I used to carry car batteries around in my army days (for signal sets) and they are bloody heavy. Probably the one you used is a smaller lead-acid wet cell (like for motorcycles). Unless you weigh like 500lbs, then I stand corrected. :bsmilie:

I think it's simple reporting or maybe a one liner like "Truck carrying illegals crashed into PIE barrier"? Sounds more like a caption for the photo. Hahaha...
Your English? Zaobao? Berita Harian?

Oops.. I think this is too much OT already.

You may be right. All I remember is getting this battery out of my friend's garage in the Us. I mentally associate garage=car usually.

It's still heavy anyway, car or motorcycle. :D Felt like carrying 3 M16s behind me.

lol.. this thread is like one-way conversation between you and me.. all the other forumers left this thread long time ago. I speak proper English. Just that to ask me to write like reporter . Thks for your help.. did a few checks, appr SPHhas no need for photographers. Have to stick to my silly desk job. I look like an idiot carrying a camera to work everyday though :bsmilie:
