If the price is right, I might want to get the D40X as a 2nd body and treat it like a compact camera. ;p

If I kenna TOTO tonight, my wish list will be:-

D2x - main body
D200 - 2nd body
D80 - 3rd body
D40X - spare body

So, ummmmm?? what 6 nos to buy today kenna 1st prize

It's not that bad lah...

Well, I'm spoiled by the conveniences of having the ISO controls and WB controls at the tip of my fingers, so I may not be able to live that well with a D80...

I will chosse D40x if I can afford all those high end AF-s lens!
If not D80 would be a better choice; more 3rd party cheaper lenses to choose from.

I am a former D40 owner.....

i'll love the d40x if there were AFS-prime lenses. lots of lovely prime lenses that need lots of experience for manual foc, even with the dk-21m, i always had problem getting a sharp image probably cuz i'm a lil ****-eyed haha (although i was almost an ex-marksman in range)

AFS-zoom lenses are killers.. i saw a 17-55 at 1.15k usd.. wah almost can buy a d200 body if top up $150 usd.

Me also went from PnS Straight to D80. Just feel that since i wanna go into more serious photography, should get one that has less limitation. And of course, jumping straight to the PRO level dSLR from PnS is not so rational i feel. Just my view la.

same with me

if budget is a concern, spend them on lens.
lens will probably stay with u longer than body...

The jump from the D40x to the D80 is far wider than the jump between the D80 and D200. The feature set on the D40x is really limiting, while the D80 can really do a lot of what the D200 handles. Given that, I would go for the D80 anytime and not have to upgrade too soon.

yup. D80 is a wonderful body and i cannot agree more!
My next body ... urm maybe a D300 ?

hey get d 80 mine rocks even the kit lens is kinda great! and with my 60mm macro i really love it but currently schooling no time take pics and no money buy tc or speedlight sobs:(

D80 rocks  :D

hmm if money is not an issue get the d200
lol

ok ok...for me, money is an issue...and it is rather unlikely that i will go very much beyond the 18-55mm kit and perhaps a 55-200/70-300...further qualify this statement by saying that i am a newbie to DSLRs...completely...been using a prosumer for the past 2.5 years but feel with the limitations of the prosumer, it's time to move up a step...to explore a bit further...

am more eyeing the d40 vs the d40x...is the extra 210 for the kit money well-spent for the additional 4mp?

sorry if i am hijacking this thread but the d80 really interests me too, except for the initial outlay which i cannot really stomach now...

*sigh*

Yes prosumer camera is very limited for the creativity. Now you know why you must move to the slr. ....
It's depend how you use the camera.
For me 40D is enough. My profession is photographer, I'm sure I can earn money from 40D (with a good lens of course).
Ok, have a happy buying new camera.

regards

If this is the case, then I'd advise you on the D40 and start practising first. After-all, the additional megapixels won't be of much use if you're not pairing it with better lenses. Save slowly, get the essentials first and then build up on the lenses, then upgrade the body as you go along.

thanks for your advice...additionally, i hardly print any photos at all, so all the MP in the world ain't gonna do me no good..

i think i will most likely go with the d40 kit (with 18-55mm kit lens) and a 55-200m AF-S VR...this should last me at least for the next 3 years...i hope  or would it be better to get a 70-300mm?

if i can swing the moolah for the d40x, i'd get it of course...but finances do not permit...

If you need the extra reach, go for the 70-300. If not, the 55-200 will serve you well. Both have VR, and optically, both are quite decent.
