One point to note is that the old (film camera) lens will not make a great match for a DSLR. The lens intended for film will generally have a resolving power (at image plane) of the order of 10 microns, while the CCD pizel size (depends on sensor) will be of the order of 6 microns or so. Putting in a very simple (and not so accurate) manner, it means a 10 megapixel camera will produce picture quality some what equivalent to 6 megapixel.

Also, a 28 mm in film will behave like a 42 mm in D40/d80. D40/D80 do not use full frame size like Kodak N14.

Please do not mislead. A 28mm lens will always be a 28mm lens, no matter where it is mounted. It's just that on a APS-C sized sensor, the angle of view matches that of the 42mm focal length because the sensor is smaller than a film negative.

Thanks, that is a better explanation. Alternately, a DSLR just crops the image as illustrated in this link http://www.sphoto.com/techinfo/dslrvsfilm.htm

My objective was to convey that a wide angle for film is not necessarily a wide angle for DSLR.

Hi littlejt. you will know that I just bought a second-hand D80 - my second DSLR body, after the D70s. It is an excellent camera. If you are thinking about shooting slightly more seriously, the D80 really is the way to go. Save up more, it will last you longer. No point buying a D40 and then upgrading when you find it too limited. The D40 really is a beginner's DSLR - while the D80 is easy enough to use as a beginner and will last you all the way to serious amateur level. or so.

Cheers!

Cheers to that!

I guess the primary problem of the D40 or D40x is the lack of ability to AF with many good lenses like the 50mm 1.8f, the Tamron 17-50 2.8f or the tokina 12-24 etc.

Which means serious D40 users will have to get more expensive options, which maybe good in the end coz when u change yr body to D80 or D200, you have all high quality AFS or HSM lenses =)

If you're a serious user, you won't be looking at a D40. ;)

Haha k k... The D40 is good in it's own way mah... just that it can AF with most lenses only =.

It's a light simple travel piece or a beginner's set or even for ladies hands...

If you're looking at it for all rounder work, then it's not the choice.

That's why I choose the D80 =)

Can anyone comment on the response of the D40 AF?
Is the 3 points less accurate / quick?
Thanks
P

If its my 1st body I'll be choosing the D80.

If its my 2nd or backup it will be the D40X. On the side note, the D40x is a winner for me due to its size. Very nice to carry around all day.

go for d200..hehe... i'm a newbie but went for it anyway ;p

*still exploring though*

You may wanna rethink such thoughts,

I personally use a D200 and thought of getting a D80 as backup but the differences there made me rethink the strategy of getting a different camera as a backup. Controls are different and the functions are slightly different too. So you may have some problem adapting at the crucial moments.

It's not that bad lah...

yeah i love the d40 for its size. the d80 with grip is erm.. just a little bulky.

the 3 point AF isnt that bad.. its pretty decent and accurate.. my friends were "fighting" at a birthday celebration and i caught images of the beer splash and milk splashing in the air. stuff that i thought a camera like this would have been unable to anyways~
