I think... erm... that your lens hood can jagar your lens pretty well.. and if you are so clumsy until you can hit the lens.... I think UV filter or no UV filter the lens is gone case already :dunno:

Yeah true, but lens hood is bulky leh... maybe personally I prefer a fit-and-forget type!

jus wan to check around, how many of u guys/gals actually use a prime lens which non AFS with ur D40??

some guys told me tat prime lense like 50mmF1.8 r not suite for D40. .

as i know as long u manage to MF skills then should be ok rite:dunno:

Just bought a 50mm 1.8 yesterday, only able to MF with D40 but the pic quality is good.

Heya lukesky, i will reply your PM but since i got lots of PMs asking me where i got the camera, i thought id post it here.

I bought the D40 kit w/18-55 lens from a fellow user. He won the kit at a newspaper competition recently and he happened to be a professional wedding photographer so he didn't need the spare camera. He put it up on the forum for sale @ 850 but since i was a newbie, managed to bargain it down to 800.

It was a good deal in my opinion. However, i did do a check with alan photo and they are selling the D40 kit with 2gb card for 799 excluding gst :thumbsup:

With the exception of WiFi enabled models, cameras don't need iDA approval, so you can think of grey set as parallel import sets rather than export sets. No local warranty. Might be a hundred dollar cheaper? Maybe you can call them up and ask.

hey guys, i am a new D40 owner and was trying to take some pictures with the kit lens.. However it seems that i cannot get a picture with good DOF with the kit lens... is that so or just that i need more practise with it....

To get a better DOF, you need to open the aperture as wide as possible (i.e. smallest f-number). For the kit lens, at 18mm, the largest you can open the aperture is f/3.5. But as you move up to 55mm, the largest you can open the aperture is at f/5.6. Hence, there is a limitation in the amount of DOF because of the aperture. However, with proper angles and positioning, you can still achieve a DOF, but it would not be like pictures taken with f/2.8 or f/1.8 lenses.

I don't need to do -0.7 compensation with the D40x... and it produces very vivid colors. I only tweak the compensation when the metering doesn't do it right, which can be + or -. I wonder what kind of shots he is taking. My preference is to use spot metering, and next would be matrix. Don't use center-weighted much.
