D40 or D80 or D60

I also think D90 is a great choice ( I am using the D90). :)

The good thing about D90 with regards to portraits photo is its higher ISO. It is about one and a half stop better than the D80. This means that the shutter can go much faster. Kids do run around quite often.

For landscape photo, you will need a good tripod.

ain't it nice to close another thread?

TS already mention #9 that "he will be getting D40"

Between the D80 or D60, I would definitely go for the D60 if I don't intend to use older non motor lenses and higher end features like depth of field preview or CLS.

Reasons being, D60 is a much newer model, has better IQ and high ISO low noise performance, has built in dust reduction, has Active D-lighting. The 18-55 VR kit lens is a much better performer in terms of sharpness and distortion compared to the 18-135 non VR kit lens of the D80. And best thing is, it all comes in a lighter, smaller package than the D80.

But if money no concern, of course go for the D90! Think its great value for all the features it has.

Go For D90 If U Can Afford And Go For D80 If U Cant Afford D90:thumbsup: But If U Decided On D90 Dont Go For Their Kit 1 Because its 18-55 not 18-105 anymore so i advice go for D90 Body Only

Hi, lingmic,

The lightweight of the D60 is a good feature, but it comes at the expense of the screw drive of older lenses. The screw drive may not seemed like much, but being a D80 user myself, I am now using a Sigma 28-70 f2.8 EX DG, that will not AF on the D40/60.

Sure there are AF-S models for the D40/60, but a f2.8 lens from Nikon will cost around $2k, while my al-cheapo Sigma cost only at about a quarter of that price. For shooting babies/kids, using flash should be minimized( best not used at all), thus options of f2.8 lens becomes crucial. The D40/60 is seriously lacking in availability of cheap options. But money is no matter, then it wouldn't matter.

Hi,

I am tagging on to this thread.

I am very very new to DSLR & am considering D60 because of it's light weight.
Generally taking pictures of children only.
Between D40 & D60, I should get D60 right? Or am I wrong?

The 18-105 kit is still available but you'll have to ask for it. Price is different, just got to make sure you're not sold the 18-55 kit for the price of the 18-105 kit. Some unscrupulous dealers might do that so better to go for the usual recommended shops ask and before putting your money down.
