New opportunity to invent a DSLR silencer. A gun can have its silencer, why can't a DSLR?

Yes there is. it's called a blimp. Sound blimps have been used for mirror flapping SLRs for years in movie studios / locations. u can't shoot without a blimp when u're shooting movie stills!

This Newell Scott must be one of those rich kids who hasn't touch any SLRs in their lives and jumped straight into getting a D2X
:nono:

I think the Sony DSC V3 that Newell Scott is using isn't even a DSLR. It looks like one of those prosumer digicams. So the shutter sound that he can turn off is probably just the recording of a shutter (like to ones in PnS cameras).

Anyway, isn't the sound of a SLR (or DSLR) caused more by the slapping of the mirror rather than the actual shutter curtains?

I managed to shut down the shutter sound using 3 methods

1. Powering down the camera
2. Removing battery
3. Using Sennheiser's HD-650
