I was surprised when you made the statement because all along I was under the impression that the DR for digital is on par or even surpass film. Normally, the exposure latitude of colour negative film is about +1.5/-6.5 stops, so that's about 8 stops, which in the case of digital could be easily represented by 9 to 10 bits, since most RAW are about 12-16 bits, it should easily surpass film in terms of dynamic range if not for noise.

not sure about reality but i think for most dslr the latitude is about 5 stops - based on my test with my eos 10d. the exceptions are probably the s2, s3 and s5 which are about twice that of 10d - i think pretty close to negative film.

The only way to really find out? Organise a shoot-out :) S5pro vs D200 vs Film :)

When I attended the Fujifilm Convention at St. Louis in 2002, Will Crockett, a Chicago-based commercial photographer, did some tests to show the dynamic range of the S2 Pro. His results were close to that of Provia 100F. I recall many audiences (who were photographers themselves) were impressed.

He also tested the S2 Pro against the all-time favorite negative film used by wedding photographers, the NPZ. His results suppressed that from the NPZ. However, the NPZ performed flawlessly in the highlights whereas The S2 Pro did better in the shadows but with the presence of some digital noise.

The technology between the S2 Pro and the S5 Pro may looks different, but I don't think Fujifilm is so dumb as to discard the strong points of the S2 Pro, and make a lousier successor. As for the S3 Pro, I could see that Fujifilm was trying to play it safe. They don't want to make too drastic changes. Why re-invent the wheel?

Sorry for the OT. I understand this is a Nikon forum, so I will end here.
