Do you rely on the Auto White Balance?

I've always used the AW mode for shoots with my D200 and find them acceptable. The example of the florescent photo could have been taken in incandlescant mode. It should give you the correct colour. With regards to purple, I suggest using the cloudy mode. It gives saturated colours and might just do the trick. Anyway, selling my D200 soon, buying D300.:D

sometime i preset my d300 wb, the pic either too yellow or redish. i use Zero wb filter to preset it. i did it on my d70, it has no prob.. n during daylight, AWB looks fine..

n i try indoor using preset, it seem works.. only daylight. anyway face this prob?
i dun knoe what went wrong... :dunno:

I always use Cloudy for D70s, D200, D2X but when it comes to D300, I use AWB! It is  !!

Edit (18 Feb 08): Now I use Cloudy on D300 also.. AWB still fails in certain situations.

All the time if its outdoors. If its indoors only custom WB with Expodisc will do

I've been using Auto -1, and it seems pretty alright for me, most of the time.

But it seems like a lot of people prefer the Cloudy WB - would it be safe to assume that's the best bet for most occasions, like street or sports?

no need use expodisc or any other white balancer:sticktong, juz use a piece of tissue or toilet paper and cover over the lens and preset it can liao.
u shld hv a fairly accurate wb:bigeyes:.

those big lens might hv problem thou;p.

As others have mentioned I also find the AWB to be good with good natural light. I also found it to be okay in a hockey arena, but in general If I don't have good natural light I'll do a MWB "Pre" for the best results.

You don't change the type of film when you shoot film right? Most just shoot daylight film (5500K). I shoot Cloudy because it's closest to 6500K which our monitors are calibrated for.

So which one is better for general purpose, under normal light conditions,
the one that consistently gives correct WB?

Auto WB, -1
or
Cloudy WB ?

Thanks.

Got both expocap and expodisc. Never want to use AWB since :)

I used to use Nikon lenses and use auto WB until I bought a Tamron lens which I find give a yellow cast. Now I use auto WB with +3 to reduce the cast.

Discovered that using AWB indoor with mix lights always gave sickening funny result. Always MWB except outdoor.
