I was just wondering if the critique corner really serves its purpose of having good feedback on images.

More often then not i see people posting up images and then leaving it to die off after a day or two. Would this classify as really searching for critique or just a place to show off a photo from your new toy?

There are some people who really search for feedback on their images. While the majority just posts for the sake of posting?

Thus i propose a "snapshot corner" for such people to post their image(s) up for various comments on their images instead of having mess up the critique section.

what do you feel about this?

:)

I thought there's already lots of sub-forum for various kind of photo posting?
The problem sometimes may not be the TS, but no comments at all.
Look at the "click" amount and the response amount... :dunno:
I seldom see any thread hitting more than a page...

True as well. Most ppl post in the critique and not in the other sub forums too. So wouldn't that be a TS problem? Or would a "moderation" be good in closing down threads after 3 days of inactivity?

Chris, thanks for starting this thread :) you brought out a big problem inside Critique Corner.

the Critique Corner is, in the first place, meant to be a place for people to look for and/or provide detailed feedback and conduct indepth discussions.

i have to agree with you to some extent and i do get the feeling that there are critique seekers who very often show little commitment when they

1. put up pictures that do not demonstrate effort

2. show little interest in soliciting feedback when little information about the picture(s) is provided when needed

that being said, there are definitely new forumers who are also new to photography and do not know how to go about making things more proactive, thus it's difficult to single out uninterested individuals from others who have little photography experience. also, we ought to keep Critique Corner open to all, experienced or inexperienced, end of the day it's a place to share knowledge, not a place to discriminate.

on the other hand, critiques given are improving, albeit very slowly. that's something we can't help as well. there are many members inside CS who demonstrated wealth of knowledge and plausible works, but if those with the knowledge are not willing to share, the quality of critiques will remain status quo.

we need both the Critique seekers and Critique givers to invest time and effort in the works and words if we want to see a quality Critique Corner. suggestions for improvement always welcomed. :)

would it help to say have the thread auto del after 3 days if there is no reply from the TS? Assuming that he/she has just posted the image up for the sake of posting it up?

Cos honestly in a way or another it kinda makes me not want to comment knowing that the ts may not be bothered to even read the comments given?

good idea, maybe i also suggest something like the B&S... a T&C come up b4 posting... then do their own rating and give their own self evaluation before anyone can give critique.

A small write up on why the image is shot that way would be good too. Just as major competitions would do. This will allow for better critique with understanding of the restrictions and thoughts the photographer has faced before pushing the shutter.

actually the suggestion for short explanation/writeup on the picture by the threadstarter has already been mentioned in the posting guidelines ... the idea of a compulsory self critique does sound good though. that'll give the TS time to think about his/her own picture and give viewers and idea of where TS is coming from in terms of the picture and his/her ability.

Another point that I would like to make is the most important aspect that some people have serious difficulties for : ARTICULATING themselves. Newbies are newbies, and they lack the technical jagons to reply... neither are they able to express the artistic side of reasoning and sometimes this causes them to simply clam up and not daring to reply to posts, especially when there are some "super critics" who cannot let go of their opinion and hang onto killing the image like a Pit Bull Terrier.

It all boils down to the culture within these boards.
