Just FYI:The new CP8700 has "a new AF-Assist illuminator for quick AF operation in low light." i read it in dpreview
So they admit low light focus is a problem of CP5700

Hi there Nikonites,
Just wondering any CP5700 owners or techies out there know how to get around the problem of focusing in a low light / dim environment without slowing down the shutter speed? For example, in a dim party environment, evening walk, etc. where I would like to capture stills without a tripod?
Thanks.

I was trying to photograph stage acts without a flash and had the same problem. I looked it up on the web and found the following answer greatly improved the problem.

"With the Nikon 5700 the best methods appear to be to avoid long telephoto, and to turn off the spot focusing sensors. Turning off auto and/or manual spot focus, allows all 5 sensors to be used together. This will provide a generally center-weighted focus option in good light, and a system that is more sensitive in low light. It is necessary to keep in mind though, that in very low light, the system will not necessarily register the subject that is closest, or in the center, but rather the subject that has the greatest contrast, even if it is off to the edge of the image. However low light responsiveness overall will improve."
