I was searching in HK, also out of stock in all major and popular stores like Broadway, Fortress, Tin Cheung (Was told that official distributors get 2 sets a month and wait can be up to 2-3months) Luckily after like 15 stores, finally found one near Times Square, last set. Bought for HKD2000 for lens + Hoya UV filter + 4GB SDHC as freegift.

Think just place your order and call frequently in case some people who placed order earlier give up lor. Otherwise, so far, i find lens is quite soft at 1.8, better around 5.6 onwards. Bokeh is very very round. Kindof regret not getting the 50mm f1.4 sigh.

maybe can try luck at lords at lucky plaza? i went there to get filter for my newly acquired 35mm f1.8 from fellow clubsnapper and asked about it and the guy said they have it, not sure about the price though, those who want it can try their luck there. hope this helps.

I don't think it will be helpful for event photography as it is a prime lens and you cannot zoom in to important actions happening somewhere away from you.

Why not give a call to this LIST OF SHOPS and check with them if they've stock. Most likely you've to pre-order from them.
