been looking around for a camera around 4 thousand. is this the right one and does it fit the range? not sure about the price at all.. :dunno:

If you're editing on FCP, your search ends here. Buy it and enjoy.

Physics. EX1 1/2" EXMOS, HM-100 1/4" CCD. 2x the sensor size :)

oic. Thanks for the explanation. From the sound of it, EX-1 also cost 2x more? :bsmilie:

The EX1 sensor is 4 times the size of the HM-100 sensor. But it is only double the price so it is a bargain really. :)

I'm feeling good alr Richard ;)

wat about this???
Panasonic AG-HMC40

I would go out on a limb to say that comparing the 1/4" CCDs on the JVC and 1/4 CMOS on the Panny, CCDs would give a cleaner image especially in low light where the small size of the chips becomes an issue. From the test shots I've seen from the HM100, there is nearly no noise even at 12dB gain. My experience with CMOS hasn't been so good. Noise is problem even for CMOS as big as 1/1.8. So I don't have much faith in the HMC40's 1/4" CMOS.
Also between the Panny's AVCHD and JVC's Quicktime compliant long GOP MPEG-2 Codec, there apparently is a 12 fold difference in log and transfer time for FCP!
Choice is pretty obvious for me.

What if it is compared to Panny HMC152? The size/weight of both camera are quite similiar. If I am editing on Adobe Premiere, can the quicktime format be easily edited on premiere? or I must record it in MP4? I had a super long time transcoding AVCHD to a more managable format for easy editing on Premiere. AVCHD apparently cant be edited natively as it is not smooth in Premiere even with icore7. Also does HM100u allows dv-out to a monitor/tv when recording?

What are your views on using Compact Flash Memory Recording Unit with a Tape Camcorder comparing to a Tapeless Camcorder?

Where can I buy the HM100u or Panny Camera? If it is not allowed to be post here, kindly pm me. thanks!

I'm not a Premiere user but if you are using Premiere on a mac, the quicktime wrapper is definitely helpful. The HM100 has an option for recording as standard MP4 for those on the PC platform. The HMC 152 has bigger CCDs than the JVC but records at a highly compressed 13Mbps AVCHD compared to JVC's 35Mbps MPEG-2. But I think the Panny will be better in low-light. Both I'm sure will let you view HD on a monitor through HDMI but not firewire.
Using a flash memory camcorder will be a lot more ergonomic than using a tape camera with an external Direct-To-Edit flash memory unit. Especially when you think about the extra battery for the external unit. But with the latter, you get a backup on tape. In an ideal world SDHC should be 100% reliable but my experience with most made-in-china brands tell me otherwise. Finally if you are trying to record 4:2:2 video via the HDMI output of the camcorder, than you have no choice but to use convergent design's nanoflash unit regardless whether your camera runs on tapes or not.
