Exact same thought here. Overall I would have prefer the LX5 in terms of the wide-angle lens and the look. I think IQ-wise S95 and LX5 should be on par but the manual lens cover turns me off coz v troublesome. One of the reasons why I sold off my LX3 last time. Going to get the S95 very soon.:)

Have you tried S95 IQ quality on maximum zoom? I think the IQ is a disappointment;(

Time is running short for me to make the decision as my trip is in Oct

Simple lah, if you think the S95 IQ at max zoom is a disappointment then get the LX-5. :)

Disclaimer: I'm going to be completely ignorant, and neglect to discuss any of the other options because a) it seems this discussion is extremely LX-5 and S95 focused, and b) I really don't know much about the others...

Depends what you have, and what you want... The LX-5 appears to be a better camera overall. While the s95 wins on pocketability, the actual work as a camera seems to be better on the LX-5 (focal length--I like wide angles :D--, lens, burst shooting, movie options, etc.), BUT (the inevitable but)...

Your choice will largely be dictated on what you have already. If you have a DSLR or m4/3rds, you are probably getting the point and shoot as a smaller alternative, and would lean towards the s95 due to the size. If you are looking to upgrade a point and shoot, or simply to get a "good" camera with more creative control that's not in DSLR price territory, then you might lean towards the LX-5, despite it's (relatively) larger size. Unless you dislike the size in the first place, in which case you probably wouldn't be considering it from the start.

Either way, through the beauty of cognitive dissonance, you're likely going to enjoy your purchase regardless of your final choice. Don't worry; you still reserve the right to ogle at "the other."
