Cokin holder + Tian Ya filters

my suggestion is to use cokin filter holder, and tianya filters.

cokin filters have horrible cast.

Sorry .. The Tainya filters come only in one size only right? Is wide angle compromised?

You mean the X-pro? Yea makes sense if you wanna get scenic shots.

no, there is a wide angle filter holder, that is specially designed to avoid vignetting - holds only one filter, and holds the filter nearer, i think.

yes, cokin p series size.

p series is fine, eventualy if you get enough money to buy singhray, and want to.. they also have it in p size.

wide angle - depends on how wide.

for the cokin 3 filter holder, confirm will have vignetting with 10mm.

it was fine for my 18-55mm kit lens, but you have to be very careful.

1 filter but same distance from what I can see. Remember there used to be a ghetto mod to saw off the 3 filter holder into a single filter holder for UWA uses.

ok then Tain Ya gradated ND (the black to clear) - darkest part is roughly ND what? No color cast right? The Cokin equivalents have color cast or not?

I've actually never used my grad ND, prefer to do exposure blending.

Comparing it physically, the darkest part seems almost as dark as the ND8 (3 stops)

Which is interesting because I thought they should have been 2 stops... Then again I never used em.

ok ND8 works. so you're the type who takes multiple shots huh. :) I am the lazy bum who only wants to do it once and then move on that's why. :bsmilie:

you mean in terms of the manufacturer's specs the darkest part only ND4? aiyo ..

Cokin makes 3 types of GND for their P series - 1, 2 and 3 stops.

I seem to remember when buying my Tianya filters that the GND was 2 stops - the error could have been anywhere, my error, the seller's error or like you said, the manufacturer's error.

Maybe someone else with one can clarify, I think there is only *one* type of Tianya GND.

Cokin has different systems... get the P ones. I personally have TianYa filters on Cokin holders. TianYa is also limited in their choices of filters as compared to Cokin.
No lah... if you use a PNS can also get the A series. Should get the right series to fit your type of camera.

There is color cast for tianya GND and ND filters. At least for mine. Which is why I'm considering saving up to upgrade to better filters.

Can anyone share how you correct the color cast through PP for GND filter? How do you deal with the transition in the photo because I believe the photo has to be selectively color balance corrected ?

good luck, the next step up is a big jump to lee or singhray. both are massively expensive.

no, if the filter is not neutral, then whole photo will be affected. it is probably because the filter has a tint common throughout.

In that case, then I have another question (sorry if I'm going off thread). Is the tint common throughout the photo or varies for GND? Because if its same throughtout then we can just correct color cast as per normal (globally)?

yes, global correction should be fine.

cokin is very hard to correct though.

Hi all,
I just bot ND8 filter.
Tried it out today for waterfalls, but outcome is no good.
entire picture is overexpose.
Any idea why?
How to improve?
thank you.

Hmmm it should not overexpose? What settings were you using? Your ND filter is to reduce the amount of light and therefore allowing you to use a slower shutter speed at a selected aperture and iso

Reduce shutter speed or aperture if overexposed. Are you shooting in manual or?

mode?

more information, best if you can post up picture with exif.

Just curious, as i'm using a 18-105 lens from nikon, is it advisable if i go for cokin P or X-pro? And if its X-pro from what i assume from the previous posts i'm unable to use tian ya filters, so if thats the case, what are the next best alternatives?
I have the 18-105mm lens also. I just bought a set of 10 Tian Ya filters, holder and ring from ebay for £50. The holder is generic I think but holds the filters well enough (no slipping etc).
2, 4, 8 ND filters, 2 ND grads and some colored grads. all seems to be fine. Not as good as Lee filters or whatever but I didn't need to remortgage my home either :)
ps. This is my first post here so hello to you all!
