Coffee table print

Courier delivery is actually 5 working days, but if you are not at home, they will re-deliver a few times before 'giving up' and pass to SingPost to deliver through the letterbox, which explains your delay.

The 42-pager looks thin because they use thinner papers. For kikuze, they use thicker paper so my 40-page kikuze book sample is rather thick.

Well kikuze is out of my leauge as i am not a pro-photographer therefore will not qualify for their services. Think i will continue to use them as i find the standard quite ok. Well at least till another competitor comes up...

Guess thin is also good cos it makes storage much better lol

I managed to visit Kikuze's website and it say's there that they don't offer the coffee table book service to the general public? I mean if the quality of the book is good i don't mind paying extra for this service. Bad experience from my previous coffee book.

So what's the consensus so far? Which is the best value for money for us mere mortals?

Ehhh, anyone know which one allows me to design my own album in other software and upload to them for printing?

If you need complete flexibility, nothing beats Photoshop. But if you want convenience, you can try Lumapix Fotofusion, but expensive if you get the complete license version. For those print-on-demand online stores like those mentioned in this thread, they have proprietary software. Among them, I feel that Templatexpert Photobook software does a great job in allowing flexibility in photo layout with limited editing capabilities.

want to up this thread... seems like no coffeetable books found in sg or near sg are close enough to true offsets?

Anyone going to organise an outing to look at the books? I've seen kodak coffeetable (ordered online)...prints are reasonable, colours are auto corrected online (looks pretty good) paper is not of v gd quality though. etc...

Anyone prints from USA/Aus sources? I'm looking for good quality (near offest) paper-type coffeetable albums!

oh, i've just tried myphotoideas.
For those who dun like to read, the summary is, try some other vendors. Your money will be put to better use elsewhere.

Verdict below.
Went for the 29.7 by 21 inch. 42 pages. Paid $85.72. Waited more than a week for the product to come.

Color: BAD BAD BAD. Okay. It's my fault. I didn't calibrate my monitor. BUT they didn't offer me any calibration scheme in the FIRST place. I pretty much trust most labs to correct colors/levels decently themselves. If they tell me they have corrected, then i think the kodak express station do a better job than them. My book came back with a lot of underexposed areas.
Color range look VERY limited. Green just seemed a tad strange.Sorta pastel like. It's the grass btw. Skin tones seemed out. my wedding couple look like they spent a month sun-tanning. Black and white images HAVE no tonality to them. Totally wasted my time dodging and burning them.

Shaprness: Not good. I think they print at a low DPI. I guess about 150-180 DPI.Pixilated is the best description( i've uploaded PDS files btw...not some low quality images)

Book quality. It looked flimsy and felt so too. When u turn the pages, there is the sound of creaking glue. I can see blobs of dried glue on the first and last pages where it's applied to hold the book together. Paper quality is thin ( but i expected this , since it's mentioned they used 200GSM paper..).

Something else: Well, they wasted one entire last page with the company logo and name, describing the dimensions of the book and listing down the name of upload file for printing WHICH isn't exactly what i want my client to SEE.

Sigh. Anyone can recommend another online print i can try?

Templatexpert Photobooks from Malaysia are so successful that they have recently expanded their services worldwide. Visit http://www.photobooks.com.sg/ . I now do most of my casual prints with them and have been happy.

Ya done one book with them and v impressed with the quality vs price. Gonna do up another book with them soon...pity now they charge in USD :p

Hi Cosycatus
Sorry to hear that you had bad experience with myphotoideas.

My experience with them was completely different. I am impressed. I contacted the customer service after uploading and indicated my requiremnts. They were pretty responsive and proactive. A couple of shots they corrected for me.

I also used the 200gsm paper - I am ok with it although its defintiely not photo lab paper. However, it is a digital photo book and I can't complain. They offer other papers too but at extra charge so I stick with the 200gsm. I did not encounter the problems you mentioned. The book was well bind and no creaking sound.

what I like about their service is the quick response and their printed cover. They did a mockup of the printed cover, emailed me and sought my feedback before doing the real stuff. Wow, I am impressed considering that I did the smallest and cheapest version. The result is worth every cent the $60 plus I paid. I will defintely use them again, when I have a little more budget.

They seem to have pretty good comment on their website too, includign from a supposedly renowned photographer.

Like I say, contact them once you upload.

Has any one seen "Let There Be Light" ? They shoot and produce printed photo books. I like it that they don't use heavy glossy paper. Instead, it's a kind of acid free paper - think it's about 150gsm or something like that. I love the prints and the feel. does anyone know how they do it? it's very nicely bounded with linen hardcover. i'm very interested to acquire a print out thats the same as theirs. can help? thanks! :)

Just felt the need to kapo in this thread, not soliciting for business.

Some of the usual problems faced by non-design trained hobbyists, wanting to create your very own books with the pictures that you’ve so painstakingly shot.

1) What software to design or layout with? Preferably a DTP software like Quark, FreeHand, PageMaker or PhotoShop, too expensive or complicated? There is also low cost software like Photomix, around $59. Save finished artwork into pdf, psd or jpeg. In our trade we say, “print ready files”. It’s no good if it can’t be opened or printed right?

2) Online download applications are free, but you must print with the online vendors. Limited features, OK if you’re not fuzzy. Pay first, unhappy also no refund.

3) You may have captured thousands, but selecting for 30 or 40 pages is still a challenge. The pain comes in selecting what to put into the book.

4) The machine are very different in printing, it use CMYK toner or inks. The key is in color balance of CMY. Unlike photo processing shops, some bothers to adjust colors for you. Print Vendors stick to a calibrated standard, at least once in the morning and if needed, in the afternoon again. Cannot and will not adjust to “your color”, pick a reference, Japan colors (coated) profiles is good.

5) You have to take full responsibility in the printed book, garbage in, and garbage out.

6) The colors you see on your screen are not what it’s printed? RGB versus CMYK.

7) Is your monitor calibrated? Can you work with icc profiles?

8) Problem when you least expect it.

I did a print with Templatexpert Photobooks, and I find the quality very good. Much better than pixart. The first print had some defects so I send it back, and they reprint another for me FOC, and reimburse me on the shipment (to them) cost. Good customer svc.

Looks like I will be using them for awhile.

Can see my layout here.

very nice piece of work you have there. Professional quality. I also very keen to use their services and in the middle of compilation of one book.

However, I couldn't figure out how to export the pictures as per your website link. I tot everything was embedded in the software and uploaded directly to them?

You can't export, I use a frame capture software of the software preview mode, import it to photoshop and crop it to the page size.

Thanks for clarifying and letting me know how u did it.

May I also know the software you used? I generally use hypersnap. Tks.
