ClubSNAPpers in Melbourne..

It work for the nose..but for not the windpipe sadly. When u reach the same sensitivity as me, humidifier actually make it worse due to the moist air coagulating the disintegrated pollen (intact pollen doesn't cause the hayfever, as it's too large to enter ur eyes and so on) to serve as a more potent delivery of much higher quantity. Hence, the thunderstorm asthma last week. My advise for those people who stay here for long term, please get the desensitization jab. The response will get worse every yr, just a matter of how bad it is. It would not get better. Mine has increased exponentially~

That sounds terrible. Well as a long time hayfever sufferer I found that living in Asia was much better for me. In Australia, Sydney and Queensland were better than Melbourne.

The humidity thing is interesting though, I do find the humidifier is helping my sinuses a lot in at home because its not as dry and there's less irritation for my eyes, nose and skin. Outside though is a different story, nasal spray works well for me.

I see that you are into aviation photography? Nice crisp sharp images of aircraft in flight!!!

Thank you! I've combined the 2 loves of my life outside of my wife and family; aviation and photography into one hobby!

Mike

Yes I see everyone has had a shocker this year with the hayfever. I get very bad allergies when in Singapore, practically every morning and evening I get sneezing fits and runny nose. During my 2 stints here (1999-2002 and 2006-current) I had NO hay fever until last year when spring was a lot wetter than the drought years. This years mad spring weather exacerbated the problem, to the point that when I fell sick a couple of weeks back, my doc told me the hay fever together with my cold almost turned into a big-time lung infection, prompting him to put me onto antibiotics (we've agreed we were both anti-antibiotics unless its very serious)

Hence, the thunderstorm asthma last week.

That was terrible. I was seriously short of breath and my cough came back with a vengeance that 2 days. I was puzzled when it happened at night until I read the papers the next day.

Hayfever takes at least 1-2 yrs of periodic exposure to develop. It'll get worse each yr, and exponentially in most cases. Prolonged inflammation due to allergy response allows some opportunistic bacterial infection when the inflammation sufficiently damaged the affected area and lost considerable amount of its immune defence due to the damage. for ur case, it pretty much follow this chronological order: hayfever -> infection. u probably did not get cold. cos cold has the same symptoms as hayfever, and they feels the same. all mucousy and disgusting. if u did not have fever, bacteria infection has not set in. it's probably still hayfever. of course, when u do have fever, the infection is considerably bad. If u re still sticking around, get the desentisation jab after this pollen season

Some interesting street photography you have.

In case you don't know, Oxford Street is the gay nexus of Sydney/NSW. If you see men being too intimate in an embrace, you would know why. I remember passing a gay club there that provides condoms and lube but patrons bring their own towel.

Did you post-process your Melbourne graffiti images to be so vibrant? Nice. What camera was it?

Yeah I might try that this week, didn't even know that QVM opened that late plus food some more.

heheh Thanks!
I know oxford street is the queer folks street. you see lots of rainbow flags too.
I havnt been there when i go to sydney mainly because it is quite out of the way (about 30mins walk out) but a friend had their bday dinner there that night and I was 2 hours early hahahaha. nothing to do so shoot something lor.

I am quite new into street photography still very shy about it so a lot of photos you see were shot from the back.. but since I got the Rokinon 85mm f1.4 been trying it out. I use a Nikon D90 :P. Manual focus is quite the challenging especially on moving subjects. so a lot of miss than hits.

regarding the graffiti bits yeah i do post process them but I dont increase saturation. only increased vibrancy using lightroom (+20 setting)
somehow for the way I shoot and post develop if i increase saturation, the reds become overblown.

Victoria Market is having a special market? Is it for food or other items?

That is what I saw when I was there.
I think it is called the Suzuki Night markets.

They have international food stalls, some live band performance, and craft stores.
There is a live art painting artist too pretty cool. This is her work: Ceciliagardiner.com

apparantly the market is only opened during summer months for 3 months, and only on wednesdays. not sure what time does it start probably sometime afternoon. Last until 10pm. I was there at about 6.40pm the wednesday past.

I got some photos in my flickr or facebook photos :P
I tried the crocodile meat burger quite shiok.

Edit: this is the link

Could you actually taste the crocodile? Most of the time it taste like chicken.

Yeah I'm going down to the market this wednesday, gonna bring the 85mm and try some night shooting.

How are ya'll planning your Christmases? I'm thinking about a photo trip within Australia if anyone's interested in joining.

Please don't take this the wrong way.

I learned over the years doing photography, and more so in my current job, seeing how some equipment is used by their owners is that some people don't use the equipment for its intended or appropriate purpose. Maybe it's a mistake, maybe it's a novelty, but I think it's really up to us to decide.

The fully manual Rokinon/Samyang 85mm f/1.4 lens is evitably slow to operate. For bright vision and easy focus, it has to be set to wide-open aperture, and before taking the shot, set to the desired aperture. The supplied matte focus screen in all AF DSLR cameras is difficult for manual focus, and changing it to a split-field or microprism spot (like those used in the good old days) is better. The lens has no automatic exposure compatibility and hence exposure bracketing may be required.

Clearly when the manufacturers made this lens, they made it for portraiture applications where subjects can comply to stand/sit still while wait for the photographer to focus, stop down, meter, and take the shot. The wonderful bokeh (as I read about on internet reviews) further proves the manufacturer's design intentions.

When anyone uses this lens on the street on unsuspecting people walking around their daily business, it will be more difficult to successfully catch nice photos. Using the lens at large apertures (for shallow depth of field and nice bokeh) under such circumstances will excerbate the difficulty and failure rate.

If anyone wants to grab candid shots with such a lens, it's easier/better to use an aperture-coupled autofocus lens from Canon, Nikon, Tamron, Sigma, etc.

I won't accelerate the growth of white hair or growth of a bald patch by using the Rokinon lens on the street for candids.

Good to meet you on Sunday!

If I do a trip, it would be towards the east of Victoria.

I definitely see your point there, if you're concern about taking a shot and not playing around with settings too much to stop down then yeah I completely understand. I think Nedkelly likes that challenge as do a lot of manual focusing users, I definitely see a bit of challenge handholding a f/1.4 manual lens but that's a learning curve I was willing to accept when I got the lens. In fact, I bought the tripod first because I wanted to explore more about manual primes for the ultimate out-of-lens effect, also knowing that my subjects aren't going to be the type that will move too much at f/1.4.

I took this fairly random shot handheld just to see the effects:

I wanted to see what it looks like at f/1.4 and it was the easiest way to compare focused and OOF subjects in that picture. I know I will probably stop it down a few more eventually for the regular shots I seem to take (kids, flowers, sleeping animals etc).

BTW, the trip I'm thinking of is Alice Springs ;-)
