you've mentioned that you don't use the 55-250 usually..
so why don't you sell all your lenses out;)..you may make 450~550S$
that will make your budget around 1.6K..rite?
then consider used or brandnew 85mm f1.8 @480~520 and
used 17-55 f2.8 IS @1000~1100
so you can still shoot 50mm@f2.8(if it is not f1.8) but you will get faster focus than the 50mm f1.8 in lowlight...plus IS:thumbsup:

if low-light shooting is an issue, why not consider as ZX recommended a 85 f1.8?

or even a 35f2? that would take care of your low-light issues.
try shooting an entire day on the street with a single prime. very liberating.

aungzanwwin: I am planning to keep my 55-250 reason being its for my landscape shots or long shots. If I sell the lens the money would mainly come from this 55-250, doubt the 18-55mm can fetch me a decent price from what I observed.

charlesleong: In my list of consideration but a prime has its cons as well not being about to zoom, though liberating the people may take offense when you get too close. :) most people.

Hi

I own a 50mm f1.8 and 24-105 L f4 IS
I use 50mm for low light and the latter for bright daylight street photography
I don't think f2.8 zoom lens good enough for low lighting condition
Thus rather go for lower f value prime lens if possible

sorry guys a quick question, I did a quick check on the price for EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM and you need at least $1.5...hmmm does it work well in lo-light or night conditions without flash (since its f4)?

The others are most correct.... the difference between f2.8 and f4 is NOT that much in really low light condition. I used to own the EF 17-40 f4 L... now using the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS. Guess what.... I still need to use Flash when shooting indoors in low-lights :bsmilie:

As I prefer Wide over Zoom..... I would rather have the wide of 17mm (27.2mm) over the 24mm (38.4mm) on my crop camera..... reminded me too much of my PnS camera :bsmilie:

Same sentiments. Need flash when shooting indoors, even at f2.8.

I must say that there are times I miss the wide end of the 17mm. I just remind myself that even when I had the 17mm (of the 17-55), there were times I deemed it not wide enough. Thus, I ended up getting a UWA. A 10-22 and 24-105 for me is just a great combo. :)

:Later,

TS has some list of nice lens there. well i'm looking for a good one for street too.
one that can be used for fast focus and without looking through the view finder like the video posted here

i wish to get a L lens or better quality for it since my other lens are rather cheapos haa.
any recommendations? and i think i prefer a greater range rather than shooting in their face ya know..

Hahaha.... both of us could agree that at the end of the day.... It is what YOU want and need that is more important :bsmilie:

Nice...... did try like him a few times.... more because of scary kena scolding from my subject...

For long 'range' L lens.... suggest either 70-200mm f4 IS L or the Non-IS version. It is more flexible because it could zoom... unlike prime like 135mm f2 L. And most importantly..... affordable at 2nd hand

i've a 18-200mm you may know it's just for travel and convenient the photo is not that good for a DSLR

85mm 1.8 that's perfect for portrait on FF camera caz it's most closed to the human eye. BUT for 40D I don't think so. *1.6 that's too far for a portrait I suggest you 50mm f 1.4 USM about 480 $

thanks for all your suggestions and comments. :)

diver-hloc: EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS seems like a darn good lens but the price seems steep for the moment... :( and its what i want at the moment therefore I am still asking around taking my time to do research and see what's my next lens. 18-55mm has its limitations and quality therefore it will be time for me to change. but research now..no worries won't buy unnecessarily. *cross fingers.

raccoon: thanks but 50mm f 1.4 is a prime lens and I worry about focal length, and I do not mind to top up a bit more to get a better one that can last rather than buying many.

Yes.... its best if you do more research and most importantly.... find out what you REALLY NEED.... as only you, yourself, would know that. (and pay for the lens :bsmilie:)

I'll suggest that you go for the more 'High-End' lense instead of the more common type.... 'High-End' lense not only have better IQ.... but also have a much better resale price should you decided to upgrade later or even downgrade.

Hi Diver hloc, i agree....didn't want to rush getting a $600 plus lens when you can have a better lens that can last and sell in the future if you top up a "few" hundreddss of dollars...but i will not be targeting at those really pricey ones.

So looking out for suggestions and pointers.

As for what I need, I will review all the replies and see from there...having a better IQ, quick focus, lower aperture etc is of course a plus point. ;)

I would go for EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

for 24-105 you may find not wide enough for some places where you can manoeuvre much.

Also I find that choosing a lens of your liking like the weight and built is also improtant factor cus I may like it heavy but for some weight is just too much. I use the 24-70L for general use.

My two cents worth:

Whichever choices you have narrowed down into, say the 24 - 105 and the 17 - 55, rent them for a day and utilise them to the fullest from the morning till night, taking note of the pros and cons/limitations. From there, you should have a better judgement of what you need and what you want !

Markyen: It seems that the competition is narrowing down to two lens EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and the 24-105. Price difference is about $100 according to the price thread..you mentioned about wide angle which I like it as well esp in areas like street photography.

Guess I will rent them for a day and see how it goes....if time permits.

Anyone had problems or owns both EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and the 24-105? in terms of lo-light such as street lights which works better....one thing about the 17-55 is "similar" to my kit lens in terms of focal length but i love the f2.8!

I am thinking if I am going overboard to get the L lens just for my 40D. too early?...some may say its a darn good investment. ;)

how about the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM?

exactly what conditions are you referring to ?

the 40D is a darn good camera and cleans up well with noise-removing software such as noise ninja or neat image especially if you shoot RAW files. if you can go the extra step, I'd say an F4 lens on the 40D is more than capable of yielding great pics in the budget you have.

Hi all,

I am contemplating on getting a lens that is suitable for street photography, portraits..basically a general purpose lens (bdays, weddings, candids) that could last a few years to come.

My budget is uncertain at the moment but will not exceed 1-1.2k or lesser. I have narrowed down to these few choices:

  1. Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
  2. Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8
  3. Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens
  4. Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L USM Lens
  5. EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
  6. EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS

I am open to other lens but do let me know the pros and cons :)

Appreciate everyone's input and would be good if you own one of them before. Do hear from you all soon. ;)

Yo PC,
U must get the tammy 17-50 2.8, This is one u will love. SHARP & CHEAP. Headshots' 85mm also Good complement, but its more specialised. The tammy will spend most of its time on yr 40d.

I see that there are alot of discussion going on regarding canon and tamron.

I guess I need to ask you all which is "Penny wise Pound foolish"

1. Canon 17-55 f2.8
2. Tamron 17-50 f2.8 + 430ex flash
3. Other lens of equal value.
