Clarke Quay night view

Hihi,

I am a newbie in photography... can i ask how do i take gd n nice pics of night scenery? I am using a canon 450D.

Appreciate if someone could guide me...

Tks

I took a few photo from different angle. Some angle didn't show the flaring.
I got 1 photo look weird, the flaring is come from the black sky like "UFO light" !!
I will post the photo tonight.. togather analyst ;)

Below is the photo look like UFO light... i also don why where the light from?

Thanks...

Hi Winson, I think the UFO flare comes from the spot lights (3 or them) underneath. When you shoot night scenery with the light shooting directly at your camera, you would see the flare especially after long exposure. Some time if you tilt the camera to a different angle, you could avoid it. The other way is to use lens with better flare control and it could minimize the flare effect. I have ever shot directly into the sunlight with there two lens - Tamron 1755 & Canon 1740L and I find the later has no flare. Just my experience and the little that I know.

Kok Weng, for good night shot, steady tripod is a MUST. Use higher f-number (eg. 8 to 20). Use low ISO like 100. Enable mirror lockup. Use cable release or 2 sec delay if don't have the cable. Practise and practise more.

Have fun.

Hi mfongym,

Thank for you good info. I also suspect is the spot light. Now I just know better lens can avoid the flare. Maybe need to take sometime go to search for better lens. The shooting above was using standard lens 18-55mm.

:)

Hi KokWeng,

Beside, also switch off the stabilizer on the lens (if the lens have stabilizer) when using the tripod in order to produce nice photo.

oic... yup i do have a tripod and now i am looking at the tripod at canon showroom which cause $88. As i think some of them have actually discuss this tripod in another forum as a gd tripod if u r on budget. I do not have a cable release but i do have a remote control. Is it the same??

also switch off the stabilizer on the lens (if the lens have stabilizer) when using the tripod in order to produce nice photo. How do i go about doing tt, ya my lens have stabilizer as i am using my kit lens 18-55mm but i do have another which is a 50mm lens.

Thanks for your ur guidance. your help is greatly appreciated!!!

I believe you are using the canon lens? If yes, you can switch off the image stabalizer on the side of your lens. It will show :Stabalizer, then you can choose to switch it on or off. Remember to switch back on after you remove the camera from your tripod.

Nice photos!!

you were using AF or MF??

hi , even used kit lens , i think you've prof talent , it's very sharp and nice pictures . need to learn from you experience with 500D . Btw , do you setup your picture style after or before the shot ? thanks , and keep posting your picture ;-)

Hi Liau,

Sorry for late late reply. Busy this few month... :)
Thank for your positive comment. I still learning. I didn't do any edit for picture style.

Hi Joyeo,

Thank for viewing. No filter apply only 18-55mm lens
# 4 - f20, 25s long exposure & iso100
# 5 - f18, 30s long exposure & iso100
Beside the above setting, when using tripod remm to switch off the stabilizer on the lens to make the pic more clear & sharpe. Try to set your own user define canon picture style with sharpness +7, contrast +1 & saturation + 2. (Personal taste). W/B set to daylight.

Hope this help.

I still in learning. Maybe other senior here can suggest better technique. :)

hihi~ i miss shooting landscapes.. nowadays only shoot events and people.. but ur photos are encouraging :)

continue to enjoy landscape photography! :D

ahh.. about using picture style, this effects the in-camera jpeg conversion/compression, which means u dont have much room to improve/edit the shot when u load the shots onto the comp, yes Jpegs can be edited , but if its already set to a certain sharpness, it will compromise IQ to a certain extent.. and that cant be reversed..

i recommend using RAW, process the RAW files in DPP then continue to photoshop to enhance ur shots.. u will like it better than leaving it up to the camera to decide for u :)

Agree as AimanKuching said, if anybody like to edit photo, using RAW file is recommended. Using Jpeg to edit will downgrade the picture quality.
