to be successful, it's not what you know but who you know. for JC, he knew how to pull the right strings. I am very certain that most established photographers who have proved to be successful by their various works from various agency, would concur with me. you would have to have someone working inside the agency, be it friends, boyfriends, husbands, girlfriend or wife. Most rely on such links to get into agency. if purely rely on skill, they might not be able to walk past the front door.

hmm. thanks for saying i have some good works, you regard me too highly.
don't get me wrong. what i meant by "we are too mediocre", really means that we should put an effort to understand the artist's work. although yes, the immediate effect of the artist's work is not apparent to us, should we hang around a little and try to feel what the artist or hear an explanation as to what the artist is trying to bring across, that is how we can sort of understand the art, and maybe in the process, improve ourselves.
i'm not saying i respect him because he's famous or rich. i respect him for his amazing fashion pieces. like i've said, as a streetphotographer he quite cannot make it lah... but as an artist his creativity knows no bounds. i respect the dude from pinkheadedbug.com too. i respect lots of street photographers, be it famous or not. (in fact street photographers often find no niche in the photography world.. lol

i hope you all understand where i'm coming from.. sometimes i can't really express myself well.
yes JC knew the right people. but he has that spark of creativity that i don't think i can pull off. how many will crack a filter and create a whole series of images using a cracked filter ? look at "obscure".. how many people will shoot a fashion series with a whole blurred out person "accidentally" crossing between the photographer and the model ? it's creativity that sparks a lot of things. he has that creativity. we should try to work towards that.

anka, anyone in the working world knows that success is hard work, opportunity, and of course knowing the right people! but you're making it sound as if it's a dirty thing. and as if he got through without any skill. talk about sour grapes...

ok i have to say something... been lurking here, but i need to point this out. seriously, before you continue shooting your mouth off, go see his exhibition first. you have no idea what the discussion is about here if you haven't even seen it.

A friend just enlightened me that this clang dude was featured in zaobao some weeks back. And pics of his work were printed. (The one i saw was a man sleeping in the middle of a traffic junction.) Going through this thread i'd say one gets a pretty good picture of what the exhibition is like and a fair idea of the discussion.

Just a little OT opinion, William Hung can make it big in America partly because of the amount of publicity he gets. Probably Americans rarely see something like that and easily gets awed by it.
Another example would be the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. To me, it's just another ordinary Chinese martial art movie that simply made its way to the American market. Isn't it just another martial art movie? Put it together with some of the Hong Kong movies we've watch, and you'll keep on wondering what's the big deal about it.
I'm not accusing anyone here, but I guess what's famous or superior in US may not turn out to be so locally or elsewhere.

Photography has evolved in the last decades as the most sort after medium in contemporary art by many establish artist worldwide. Unfortunately, most peers who practice the craft in Singapore are not expose or educated to understand the evolutions that has taken place.
Many Singaporean photographers or artists have left their comfortable and extremely well rewarded career to challenge the very best in the world. We are constantly battling against millions of masters in their craft and ourselves, hoping that one day we would be able to contribute what we gain to where we are from.
It has been extremely disappointing and hurting how John Clang has been so brutally criticized for his effort. He would definitely benefit himself by just exhibiting in the States or Europe. John was already a very successful photographer when he was in Singapore, earning the amount of money many would not believe a photographer could earn. We should stand on ovation to his triumph and appreciate his effort to educate. What he achieved did not come easy.

If he was so afraid of getting hurt, why exhibit at all? Of course, I don't think he was afraid. He is an artist, remember? I think some of the so called contemporary art are nothing but scraps of BS plucked from the air and just because it's popular in outside Asia doesn't mean anything.
So once one has made it(successful), anything he does must be applauded? Seems childish to me.
